UPPER MARLBORO, Md, May 5— A taxi driver was killed, two women | were injured and a man arrested for driving while drunk in three nearby Maryland traffic mishaps yesterday aft- ernoon. i George N. BALTIMORE, Md., May 5—Follow- ing instructions of Judge W. Calvin Chestnut, & jury in the United States| Distriet Court yesterday returned a verdict of not guilty as to four men| and s woman charged with conspiracy | to violate the Mann act by transport- ing two women from Washington to| the Old Colonial Tea House at Bila- | POrt densburg, Md. Chestnut directed the jury to return the verdict, he said, because the Government had failed to prove a conspiracy on the part of the de-| fendants “This indictment does not charge a violation of the white-slave law or that these people are unworthy char- acters,” the sald. “It charges them with or an agreement to do & certain thing. Under the law they must be acquitted on such & charge if it is not proved, no matter how immeral their general conduct may have been. “No Evidence of Conspiracy.” “I find no evidence that there was a conspiracy on the part of any ome to take these two girls as charged. You must return a verdict of not guilty.” Those acquitted were Charles Leavitt, | Charles Missler, Samuel Kushner, Mrs. Margie Kushner and William Hancock. Charles J. Danford and Ahmed Abra- ham, both named in the indictment, pleaded nolo-contendere and were not on trial. Judge Chestnut sentenced Abraham to & year in jail and suspend- ed it on condition of good behavior. The disposition of Danford’s case was de- ferred. Hancock, immediately after the ver-| dict, was taken in_custody by George | W. Collier, United States marshal, on a detainer placed against him by authori- | ties of Lancaster County, Pa., where he is wanted on a murder charge. Name Leavitt as Manager.
