NEW YORK, May 5.—Stocks on the Curb Exchange moved lower today, but the decline failed to bring out increased Lo R Bmmnans BY FRANK H. McCONNELL, Assoctated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, May 5—Several large New York banks are asking their out- of-town correspondents to keep an alert watch for venders of wildcat securities. Reports received by New York banks with investment affiliates, including Chase National Bank and National City Bank, say salesmen have appeared in a number of communities posing as representatives of these institutions and seeking to get investors to switch their investments. Usually the sales- man suggests that the owner of say 10 shares of American Telephone exchange his stock for 500 shares of some gaudily embossed but practically worthless se- curity. Revival of wildcatting has reached considerable proportions. Correspondent institutions are working closely with the large banks, seeking cases where alleged security salesmen _represent themselves as members of the banks' staffs. Difficulty stands in the way, bankers say, because of the ease with which companies can be incorporated in some States with names similar to those of well known investment organizations. While it by no means follows that a local company with a name similar to Chase or National City may be In- volved in illegal transactions, bankers say in some instances the name is copied merely to facilitate marketing securities of doubtful value. Wildcatting reached its zenith during the bull market. Approximately $1,000,- 000,000 & year, it was estimated at that time, was finding its way into the pockets of vendors of fraudulent securities. NEW YORK, May 5 (Sp>cial).—An- other group of stocks, which had been regarded as “deoression proof,” is be- | ginning to feel the effect of liquidation by holders who are protecting losses in other securities. Of late the tobacco stocks have been under pressure. While offerings in them have been moderate, the decline has been substantial. Amer- jcan Tobacco common is among those that have dropped to a new low price this week and is selling close to a 10 per cent income basis, considering the cash amount paid alone. Reynolds To- bacco is also at the lowes the year. The same is true of Liggett & Myers. Production by all of the companies has been decreasing in the past six months. . Ireland to Have Fleet. Even if the oft-mentioned Irish navy is still a dream, people of the Irish Free State are rejoicing over the ex- pectation that shortly they may spoak of the “Irish fleet.” It will be a fishing fleet for protection and promotion of the fishing industry. Patrol boats under government jurisdiction will watch fishing season. There also will be an increased fleet of fishing trawlers con- trolied by the fishermen’s association. Women Must Curb Speeches. NEW YORK, May § (Special) —Two of the prominent General Manage- ment Investment their dividends this week, mainly on account of the loss in income from stocks in their portfolios that have re- duced and omitted their payments. It is understood that heavy pu of the debenture bonds of a third trust have been taking place for some time, with about $15,000000 of such bonds bought in and canceled for the ac- count of this one group. This action is significant in 'w of the fact that the depreciation in the assets of the trusts has brought the proportion of such assets to bonds outstanding below the percentage fixed in the indenture.
