EW YORK, June 6.—The following is y's summary of important cor- poration news, prepared by Standard Statistics Co., .Inc., New York, for the Assocfated Press. News Trend, . Steel ingot production during the month of May fell below April and May, 1930, averaging 96,365 tons daily for the 26 working days, compared with a daily average in April of 104,711 tons for 26 days and 147,515 tons’ average for 27 days of May, 1930. Operations during this May were at the average rate of 45.36 per cent of theoretical capacity, below both the rate of 49.29 per cent in April and 73.68 per cent in last May. Although the drop from last May is a significant indication of the relative position of the industry this year, the drop from April is to be acccunted for largely by the natural decline for this season of the year. Unofficial estimates have been made of the volume of unfilled orders that the United . States Steel Corporation will report on June 10 for May 31, which ‘indicate a decline of between 250,000 and 300,000 tons below the vol- ume on April 30. The Companies. CALL NAT'L 1460 ANational Teli ery FSssocialion Union Oil of California gets $600,000 | ESTATE STEEL INGOT OUTPUT DECLINES CLOSE TO 40 PER CENT LEVEL Special Dispatch to The Sta PITTSBURGH, June 6—For a sec- ond week steel ingot production has dropped 2 points, the rate in the week now ending being no more than about [ 40_per cent. ‘There is fully 16 points, or nearly 30 per cent, decrease from the high poirt, in the latter part of March. The rate is now between the 36 per cent of De- cember, the low month, and the 43 per cent of January, and as seasonal de- crease is strongly in evidence there can hardly be doubt but that next month will run below December. By no means would this be contrary to precedent, as that has been the usual thing in ordinary times. Seasonal Influences. It has turned out, contrary to expec- tations in many quarters, that sea- sonal influences are particularly strcng this year. The idea that with buyers very conservative and that with slow- ly improving fundamental conditions steel demand would grow slowly and almost continuously all this year proves to have been altogether erroneous. Steel production rcse with unusual rapidity. There are the usual seasonal swings. as to direction and as to time, but they are magnified. It has never been easy to forecast steel company’s earnings with the closeness that might be expected when facts as to tonnage and market prices are as well known as they’are. The first quarter of this year showed sur- prising divergencies from these par- ticular facts, for market prices averaged only an almost insignificant amount below those of the December quarter and steel production was 15 per cent higher, yet' outside of Bethlehem the large companies showed marked de- creases in tota] earnings. ‘There may have been some special factor to depress earnings in the first quarter, and that mfighz aid the June quarter, which certainly needs all the help it can get, for tonnage will total 5 to 10 per cent under the March quarter and market prices are lower in several lines, not _higher in any item that would count as to earnings. Unit costs, moreover, would naturally be higher. ~ Rivalries in Industry. Conditions have gotten to such a pass that a feeling Is arising in some com< panies that there is no chance to make real profits and it is better to curtail losses by letting somebody else take orders that could only be secured with promise of loss. The usual idea in steel has been that additional business could be booked at an apparent loss, but k2 advantageous by reducing unit cost + the entre output. Whether suca o spirit of renunciation will spread very far remains to be seen. It would be quite a new thing in steel. On the other side there are certain rivalries that it would take something quits spe- cial to terminate. (Copyiizht, 1931 BUSINESS DECLARED ON FIRST LAP UPWARD | Special Dispatch to The Star. Imports for 10 months to April were reported at $956,832,000, against $1,598,- 198,000 a year ago. | BANK CLEARINGS Quite a decided improvement appears in the report of bank clearings this week. The total for leading cities in the United States. as reported to Dun's Review, of $8,819,668.000, is 6.4 per cent under those of a year ago. At New Yerk City, clearings of $6,421,781.000 are 3.6 per cent less than those of last lyear. while the aggregate at centers outside of New York of $2,397,887.000 is 13.6 "per cent smaller. The week this year includes only business days. Tak- ing this into consideration, clearings this week are considerably in excess of any week back to the first week of Jan- uary and only slightly below the amount reported fcr that week. The improve- ment is further reflected in the average daily clearing for June to date, amount- ing to $1,836,759,000, against an aver- age of $1,457,562,000 for April, the lat- ter being larger than for any month this year prior to June. There were al:o only five business days in the week a vear ago. Boston, Baltimore and Now week than in last year, and at several | important cities the reduction from la.t year's figures is small. BOY FARMER MAKES PROFIT OUT OF COWS | Starting With Heifer Six Years Ago, He Now Has Nine Holsteins and $6,046 in Bank. FREDERICKSBURG, Iowa. June 8. | —Howard Whitcomb is only 18, but he can teach many of his elders some- thing about making money raising cattle. Six years ago Howard, who lives on & farm in Chickasaw Csunty, near here, had one heifer calf. Now he has nine Holsteins and a bank account of $1.046 profit from the cows and calve. The Holstein-Friesan Association des. ignated him the Holstein boy champion of 1930. The boy has watched his cents. Butter fat brought him a gross return of $803, prizes added $380. His nine head are evaluated at $1,125. The total cost of feeding and caring for his herd for six years was $1,439. Young Whitcomb’s first heifer, Chickasaw Tritomia Lass, produced 725 pounds of butter in the past two years, The second of the herd, Johanna Rose Homestead Ormsby, made a 348-pound record as a three-year-old, and five of the herd have not reached producing age.
