FINANCIAL. STOCKS SUBJECTED 10 PROFIT SALES Renewed Short Selhng Also Helps Along Week End Drop in Prices. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June'6.—Week end profit-taking and renewed short selling ate & hole into the stock market ad- ‘vance today. Sales exceeded 700,000 &hares. | Prices were off at the opening, but| the dullness of trading on this re- | action was followed by a steadier tone as the first half hour was passed. Of- ferings came in steadily, if slowly, how- ever, and the market worked slowly Jower during the balance of the two- hour session. Trading seemed governed by technical conditions rather than by | any outside influence. All groups participated in the decline, which was sharpest in rail stocks The range was about 1 to 3 points for pivotal issues. United States Steel lost 2% and there were 2 to 3 points declines for American_Telephone, North American, | Borden, Du Pont, Electric Power & Light, R. H. Macy, Allled Chemical, | lidated Gas, American Tobacco | Frisco, New York Central, Penn- | sylvania and Illinois Central. Union | Pacific, which climbed rapidly during| the recent rally, dropped 5'; and Nor- folk & Western slumped 13. Auburn | Auto’s loss was 6, while International | Business Machines yielded nearly 8. American can was down slightly more than 2 points. Brokerage circles felt the market was entitled to a setback after the active rebound and the dullness of the trading on the week end sag suggested that necessitous liquidation, for the time being at least, had been cleared up. News was largely indecisive. En- couraging items were the smaller de- cline in bank clearings for this week as compared with a year ago and the rise of 1 point in Ycungstown district steel operations for next week. The gain in the later index of business activity was the first in some time and tended ‘to offset an estimate of a large de- cline in unfilled orders of the United States Steel Corporation at the end of . The actual figures will be available next Wednesday. but the pre- liminary guess was a drop of 250.000 to 300000 tons, or under the average for the past seven years. The steel in- dustry is experiencing a seasonal con- tractfon, but the low level of opera- tions, even at the Spring peak, empha- sizes the unfavorable aspects of the ;!ultlon from the standpoint of earn- B the Associated Press NEW YORK, June 6.—Retail sales of men’'s clothing and furnishings dur- ing the current week have been the most satisfactory since the ‘end of March, although the general volume of trade still continues disappointing, New York store executives report. The last three days of this week have been particularly encouraging. with consumer demand stimulated by the warm weather, it was said. | ‘The set of simplified sizes in misses’ and women's ready-to-wear recom mended by the Committee on Stand- ardization and Size Terminology of the Merchandise Managers' Division of the National Retall Dry Goods Association was adopted at a meeting of the com- mittee with representative apparel manufacturers. Only a small percent- age of the manufacturers obijected to the suggested standards, which will go into effect immediately. The opening week of the month brought a sharp increase in both whole- sale and retail demand for sterling silver and pewter hollow ware, trade advices state. In sterling silver the call in the wholesale market was chiefly for merchandise suitable for graduation and wedding gifts. Items priced at $5 and $10 were popular. Most of the demand for pewter goods, it was said, was in the extreme low end ranges where merchandise suitable for use in Summer cottages was wanted. Improvement in both shipments and sales of window glass featured an Bank Stock Prices Enjoy Brisk Rally In Week’s Trading By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 6.—The New York City Bank stock market during the past week registered a brisk rally as compared with the previous week, the dollar index figures compiled by Hotit, Rose & Troster shows. Based on June 6 prices, 16 leading bank and trust company shares were quoted at 16.8 times known earnings, against 16.3 nmis at the close of the previous week. The yleld now stands at 4.869 per cent, against 5.022 per cent a week ago. COTTON CROP LT, BUT STOCKS GAIN |Smaller Yield This Year May Be Offset by Carryover Now Awaiting Sale. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 6.—Present indica- tions are that the carryover from the | present cotton crop will total in the neighborhood of 6,738,000 bales, says the Alexander Hamilton Institute. This will exceed the previous high record of 6,590,000 bales on August 1, 1921, and will compare with 4,531,000 bales on hand at the beginning of the cur. rent season. This distressing situation was the result, first, of the failure to curtail production sufficiently during 1930 and, secondly, of the severe decline in world consumption of raw cotton. Remedial measures are being applied to the first of these, the acreage planted to cotton this year being re- ported as 10 per cent less than in 1930. Several other factors will probably ald automatically in reducing the crop, according to the institute's current bul- letin. The low prices which have pre- vailed in the cotton market during the entire season have materially lessened the farmers' buying power. Farm pur- chases of fertilizer have decreased by about 25 per cent from those in 1930. Cultivation will also probably be on a much less intensive scale. despite the cheapness #nd abundance of labor. Weather conditions have been more fa- vorable for the development of the boll weevil and its emergence has been re- ported in greater quantities than during last season. Taking all the adverse features into consideration, it is estimated that the cotton crop in 1931 will amount to not over 11,500,000 bales, or a decline from the previous year's harvest of 16.7 per cent. The actual supply available for distribution during the coming season, however, will be only slightly smaller than in the 1930-31 season, and will total approximat: y 18,000,000 bales. WHEAT VALUES DOWN ON BEARISH REPORTS Lack of Export Demand and an Uncertain Weather Outlook Depress Prices. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, June 6 —Notwithstand- ing that an authoritative summary said the Canadian crop situation was the worst at this season in 29 years, wheat prices today showed weakness. The chief reason was that the report as- serted one good soaking rain within a week wculd materially alter the out- look. Another bearish factor was scantiness of fresh export demand for wheat from North America. Wheat closed unsettled, 1z to 3 cents lower, corn, !5 to 13 down; oats. 1s to 35 off. and provisicns unchanged to 12 cents setback. WHEAT— June . July . Septembe; December CORN— otherwise quiet and rather listless week in the flat glass industry. the American Glass Review says. Distribution of plate. rough rolled and wire glass con- | tinued unchanged. The increase in | residential building operations and re- | ‘plenishment of jobbers' stocks were re- | sponsible for the better call for win- dow glass. | ‘This week Holdings (United States): “securittes ..
