By the Associated Press. Clouds have been put to & new use by the Weather Bureaeu as wind gauges for aviators. A cloud travels with the wind and makes visible the speed of the wind at & certain altitude. The bureau has devised an apparatus by which ob- servers can determine & cloud'’s speed. They sight the elouds in a black mirror mounted in a frame graduated by de- grees. One factor for a computation is obtained by observing the image of a cloud as reflected by the mirror for a period of time. ‘The second factor needed is the cloud’s distance above the earth. To obtain this a standard “ceiling” balloon is sent up. By timing it, it is pessible to estimate the distance. ‘The observer then computes with these two factors the rate at which the eloud is moving and whether the pilot will encounter a headwind or a tail- wind. The bureau said it is possible | frequently to tell the fiyer he will find | faverable winds at a certain altitude, but less favorable conditions at other | altitudes.
