FINANCIAL. CURB SHARES SLIP ON PROFIT TAKING Market Eases Off as Traders Realize on Recent Advance. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Assoctated Press Financial Editor. NEW “WORK, June 6—Curb stocks, particwarly leading ofl and utility shar-a, receded further from the high point of the week in the short session today under the adverse influence of week end profit-taking. With traders apathetic, realizing sales contributed most of the business of the dus, short session, with the total turn- over amounting to 160,000 shares. The reaction averaged less than a point, but recssions among ofl and utility shares that led the advance in mid- week were larger, ranging up to 4 points. Vacuum, which rallied earlier in the week from a year's low at 23 to 35, yielded 3!, points after earlier strength, Humble receded 2 and Gulf was off 33, on the day. Standard of Xndimn sagged 3, to close the week 3 poin above the year's bottom price. Cmc.s Service slowly receded 12 to 11. All of the ofl shares retained a portion of the week's Tise. ‘The recession in the utility group was slow, but became somewhat more active just before the close as the volume of offerings increased. Few losses ex- ceeded a point, the most notable being the 113-point drop in Electric Bond & Share, the 2-point reaction in Ameri- can Gas & Electric and losses of a point each in American Light & Trac- | tion and Tampa Electric. Trading in specialities was extr-mely quiet and confined to A few issues. Technicolor, and Great Atlantic & Pa- cific. each yielded a point. Aluminum af America, one of the spectacular fea- tures of the week, elosed at 110, off 3 net and comparing with 123, the high' for the advance. General Tire & Rub- ber dipped 8 points to a new year's Jow. and Parker Rustproof yielded 3 ints on profit taking. Investment rusts eased | lrnctlonull GRAND UNION SALES NEW YORK. QUARTERLY DIVIDEND. Directors of Interstate Department Btores. Inc.. have declared a regular gquarterly dividend of 50 cents a share on the common stock of the company, payable June 30 to stockholders of rec- ord June 20. Decline in Stocks Of $5,936,002,806 In May Is Reported By the Associated Pr NEW YORK, June 6.—The market value of all shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange declined $5,936,002,806 in May to a tnlll of $42,533,985,679 as of June 1 Total borrowings by members of the exchange against collateral as of June 1 amounted to 3.37 per cent of the market value of all shares listed, compared with 3.40 on May 1. MIDWEST FARMERS DECRY PRICE LEVELS IDisnmhction With Present Crop Values May Lead to Po- litical Action. Special Dispatch to The Star. KANSAS CITY, Mo, June 6.—At business and financial meetings during the past fortnight the one subject mcst digcussed has been the possible trans- Jation of economic depression in the farm country into political action. Undoubtedly there are strong under- currents of dissatisfaction among pro- ducers and these have been strength- | ened by prcpaganda to the effect that Eastern industrial interests are main- taining a higher standard of living than the farmer. ‘The movement toward reduced sal- | aries and wages seems entirely logical 7+to a considerable portion of the West. The argument is that the farm country is unable to buy because commodities are too high, compared with any pos- sible income frcm the land. If wages are reduced, the logic goes, commodities will be cheaper and the farmer can buy, thus starting the flow of trade. This doctrine is preached quite gen- erally and the attitude of' the producer grows more resentful with every lower- ing of the price range of what he has to sell. Just now he is in a state of mind that makes him vulnerable t> arguments for a Western coalition against the East, and he may continue 50 to think. Much will depend on the price level of his products after harvest has been gathered and on the possi- bility of a gradual return toward nor- mal conditions. A most interesting Summer is ahead, both in finance and in the political atmosphere developed by business and farm affairs. (Copyright, 1931.)
