GRAVITY CONSTANT | IS REDETERMINED : New Measure Has Precision of Two Parts in 1,000,000. value of the constant of gravita- , perhaps the most fundamental fig+ in creation, has just been redeter- ed with a precision of approximate- two parts in a million at the Bu- u of Standards here. Dr. Paul D. Heyl has just announced in the last issue of the Bureau's Jour- nal of Research the results of his Mmeasurements with a tortion balance conducted in an underground chamber. His value is 6.670 multiplied by one «one-hundred-millionth. This carries now given as the standard, which been accepted for 30 years. ‘The extreme importance of this con- stant in delicate physical measurements. 1t is explained by the bureau, justifies the determination of tion of this extremely minute figure. co! to the law of gravity, it is ex- plained, every mass in the universe at- tracts other mass with a force roportional to the uct of the two masses divided by square of their distance apart, the product being multi- gl.l:d by the elusive G, whose value has n redetermined. The last figure was considered entirely correct only to two parts in a thousand. Matter of Speculation. Just what G represents still is & mat- ter of speculation, but, says Dr. Heyl, “this constant of nature is one of the few that best deserve the name. It is known to be independent of the nature of the attracting materials to a pre- cision of six parts in ten. It is known to be independent of the temperature to & precision of about one part in 10,000, and it appears to be unaffected by the presence of different materials in the space between the attracting bodies. In eoretical importance it ranks with the velocity of light. “In Einstein's theory of gravitation it appears in the formula for the curva- ture of space due to the density of the distribution of matter. Practically this constant is of importance because it enables us to determine the mean density of the sun and of the other planets of the solar system. It undoubt- edly has some intimate connection, not yet understood, with the ultimate struc- ture of the universe.” Physicists and astronomers, ‘Dr. Heyl R. HARRIS & COMPANY THE. SUNDAY its_out, have made the assump- that this constant of attraction, determined between two bodies -on the earth’s surface, also remains 8 constant over such a vast extent of space as stretches between the earth and the sun. Little Practical Importance. “The arbitrary nature of this as- sumption,” he says, ‘“becomes clear when, following Einstein, we regard gravitation as due to space curvature the presence of matter. ‘We are, in fact, assuming space every- ‘where to be equally resistant to defor- mation. We do know that the constant of gravitation is approximately ‘the same at several points on the earth's surface, but- we not know that ‘the same will hold true for different radii, as between the earth and the moon, or even between the center and the sur- face of the earth. “But if we are wrong in this as- sumption it is of little practical im- portance. Our estimates of the masses of the heavenly bodies might be in error, yet their mutual attraction and relative motions would still be the same. However, in the case of a body moving in a very long elliptical orbit, such as a periodic comet, there might be a small differential perturbation from this cause. “We are not entirely without evi- dence that our estimate of the mass of the sun, at least, is not grossly er- roneous. The Einstein shift of the lines of the solar spectrum depends on the RECORD MAYFLOWER LINEAGE IS CLAIMED Col. F. A. Pope of Washington Pos- sesses 53 Lines of Direct Descent. The anniversary of the Ianding of the Pilgrim Fathers, December 20, 1620, which was celebrated in Washington yesterday, called attention to one local resident who has perhaps: the largest number of forbears who came over on the Mayflower, Col. Francis Amory Pope, U. S. A., who resides at the Mayflower Hotal, was revealed by his friends as possessing 53 lines of direct Mayflower descent. If there are any others claiming more Iines, they are unaware of it. Col. Pope’s lineage includes this amazing record: Direct descendant in the ninth gen- eration from Capt. Myles Standish in two ancestral lines; ninth from John Alden and his wife, Priscilla Mullins, in three lines: Alice Mullins, three lines; ninth from —_———————— solar mass. It is safe to say that our estimate of the mass. of the sun is not in error by as much as 20 per cent.” F STREET - AT - ELEVENTH DIAMOND BRACELETS tenth from Willlam and |f§ STAR, WASHINGTON, D. HYATTSVILLE, Md., December 20.— Having repeatedly warned that Christ- mas greens cannot be cut in Maryland without the written consent of the owner, Prince Georges County policé made the first arrests of the year for this offense when they -took Washington men into custody in woods bordering on the Defense Highway.
