Holly and ground pine are fast dis- appearing—Use substitutes for Christ- e With this slogan, the Wild Flower Preservation Society, of which P. L. Ricker of the Department of A[‘rinul- ture is president, is again waging campaign this year in the interests o( preservation of mm Christmas greens. ‘The American holly, Mr. Ricker ex- plains, was formerly common, and mostly within 50 miles of the Atlantic Coast, from Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, | to Florida and Eastern Texas. It is now practically unknown in any quan- tity north of New Jersey. | In the central and southern part of that State it is found in quantity along the streams back into the pine-barren | country and, while it is cut to a con- siderable extent at Christmas, the ad- joining Philadelphia market is largely supplied from Delaware, the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay of Maryland, where it is still found. Most of the holly coming into the Washington market is cut from the neighboring country, Mr. Ricker ex- plains. His society is not endeavoring to put a complete stop to the use of holly at Christmas time. But it is urging the use of holly “moderately,” and is earnestly pushing a campaign for the cultivation and growth of holly in the Eastern States to preserve this beautiful tree. At the present rate of destruction, ac- cording to Mr. Ricker, “pickers and dealers are rapidly working themselves out of a profitable business unless the cutting of whole small trees for the market (which is common) gnd the stripping of large trees is :wnp’d and a plan put into effect to cut certain areas Open Delivered To Your Honu for “Get AII the | valescents. | D pbtency...builds new vitality. only once in four years unless the trees have trunks 5 or 6 inches in diameter.” —— WILL DISCUSS MEYER Senate Agrees on Date to Consider Reserve Board Head. ‘The Senate yesterday reached an agreement to consider the nomination of Eugene Meyer of New York as gov- ernor of the Federal Reserve Board im- mediately after consideration of the Tariff Commissioners January Meyer’s confirmation is opposed by Sen- ator Brookhart, Republican, Iowa. is weak in ultra-violet: You needn't suffer for lack of it.
