DETROIT, August 2.—Observers of sutomobile manufacturing are begin- ning to doubt that the predictions, made last January, of a 4,000,000-car year, will be borne out. T+ readjustment, that virtually has been a continuous process since the first of the year, is taking longer than the calculations’ of the optimists antici- pated. The consequence is that pro- duction “vacation” periods, which have been resorted o as a means of allow- ing the retail end to recover itself, are being lengthened, with a resultant de- erease in volume. Ford has found it expedient to make the factory lay-off three weeks instead of the two originally scheduled. With few exceptions, other plants that have been closed for holidays, inventory and other reasons have resumed. but are ex- hibiting even greater caution than in previous weeks. Most of them are op- rating, but on the basis of profuction weeks that have been shortened from the previous period. The reactions to new models recently shown by Studebaker, Chrysler and Buick are described as favorable, in view ©f conditions and comparable to those of other seasons, but it is realized that Sales volume has much ground to re- gain for. all factories before a general Upward trend can be definitely said to ve set have set in. With production of the first six months approximating 2,330,000 cars and trucks, the showing for this year to date is a few hundred units better than that of 1928, but the latter year had no corresponding period of Summer dull- ness like the one that is being exper- ced now. i (Copyright, 1930.)
