FIN -~ STOCKS HOLD FIRM "IN DRAGGY MARKET Leaders Register Slight Up- turn as Short Interest Cov- ers Commitments. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Financial Editor, NEW YORK, August 2.—Disgusted with the cranky stock market, traders all but ignored it today, and share prices reflected little but the closing out of short contracts by bear traders anxious to be clear of commitments over Sunday. A better tone in the utility shares, which were under considerable bear pressure yesterday, Was an encourage- ment to such speculators for the Tise s bothered to look at the ticker tape. Leading shares, both in that group and in the industrials, worked a point or #0_higher. Traders could not find a clue in the | conflicting and uncertain week end trade and business reports on which| to base operations. Even the mercan- title services were. in disagreement. Dun's reported some improvement in retail distribution, but Bradstreet's said its repcrts indicated that both whole- sale and retail trade were quieter. News from the motor industry was a little more cheerful. Walter P. Chrysler issued a statement expressing the belief that the turn for the better | had appeared. On Monday, several f lants, including those of Ford, which d been shut down for two or three ‘weeks, are scheduled to resume opera- tions. Estimates of steel mill activity for the next week do not indicate any considerable acceleration, but at least there is no suggestion of further reces- | s ANCIAL Business Notes | By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 2.—Anticipating a general ' stiffening of commodity prices, purchasing agents for industrial plants are preg:rlnf to enter the mar- ket to cover their future requirements, during the next few weeks, it was re- | ported in the trade in New York. - The belief is general among that most of the raw commodities have touched their lowest price levels and will start to swing upward under the impetus of even & small buying move- ment. A definitely better tone is reported in electrical equipment business in_the Eastern district and a definite turn is | anticipated within 30 or 60 days, Elec- | trical World reports. Smaller electrical | apparatus is moving satisfactorily in | the Middle West. The Southwest and the Pacific Coast reports many large industrial projects and buildings in prospect and the general outlook is ex- ceedingly gratifying. July has_brought mno recovery to business in Europe, the Business Week ays in a survey of business abroad. “Rather,” the survey says, “business has lost ground virtually everywhere, according to month end reports.” 100 STOCKS GAIN 57 PCT.IN MONTH Issues Same as in Middle of January and 13 Pct. There is no money market on Sat- urday to give an indication of credit | trends, but_the monthly survey of the| New York Federal Reserve Bank made | its appearance and indicated contin- | uance of satisfactory conditions in both credit and banking. An investigation | of 118 country banks in this district | failed to bear cut rumors lhlisuch banks have been carrying a $krious volume of frozen loans. Of this num- ber, 92 had either no loans under- collateraled, .or a&_megligible amount; only 9 had from 5 to 11 per cent of their loans lacking in adequate col- lateral. teral. Such shares as U. S. Steel, United Corporation, American Can, American Water Works, American Telephone, Electric Power & Light, North Ameri- can, Radio, General Electric, Alr Re- duction and National Biscuit gained a point or so, while Consolidated Gas, a soft spot yesterday, railied 2. Inger- soll Rand, Union Pacific and Auburn Auto mounted 3 to 5. On the other hand, U. S. Industrial Alcohol, Sears | Rosbuck, American Tobacco, Houston Oll and Byers lost a point or two.| ‘Warner Bros. duplicated the year's low at 3515, then rallied a little. Total sales were approximately 350,- 000 shares. The closing tone was firm. MOODY BELIEVES TURN IS NOW NEAR Better Fourth Quarter, With Sharp| -Recovery by Winter, Fore- cast by ‘Economist. " “We see no conclusive signs as yet that business will stage a strong im-| mediate revival, aljbough we are al- ready very near the turning point”| says Moody’s Reylew. “Inventories of goods are being redyced but slowly and commodity prices have not yet shown definite evidence of stabilization. Em- ployment, and particularly pay rolls, continue to fall, and further pressure may be exerted on wages. Depression in other countrles, while not becoming ‘worse, is still acyte end conditions in the long-term capital markets do not favor an immediate improvement. ‘Nevertheless, the corrective process | in inventories, retail prices, labor costs | and capital costs has progressed a con- siderable distance. A similar correc- tive process in wholesale prices and re- duction of basic materials has become very drastic. At the same time, dis- tribution of goods to consumers has been relatively ‘well maintained, while our banking system—in spite of some post-inflation abnormalities—is fully | capable of financing & commercial ex- | pansion of almost any reasonable lati- | tut de. “The balance of all these factors, to- gether with the approaching movement of crops, favors strongly a revival of at least full seasonal magnitude begin- ning next month. Once this revival gets under way, it is expected to gen- erate a chain of favorable develop- ments, leading to a definitely more- than-seasonal improvement in the fourth quarter of the year and a sharp recov- ery by Midwinter.” S e FOREIGN EXCHANGES.
