AUGURT -3, 'PERUVIAN OFFICIAL DIES AT EMBASSY J. Alvarez de Beunavista, First Secretary, Fails to | Recover From Operatlon. | By the Associated Press. J. Alvarez de Buenavista, first secre- tary of the Peruvian embassy here since 1927, died in Emergency Hospital yes- | terday afternoon, following a recent operation for an intestinal disorder. | The operation was an effort to re- lieve Senor Buenavista's iliness of about three years, which became acute last month. Following the operation, July 23, it was learned today, the gravity of his condition remained 'apparent, and blood transfusions and other means were employed to promote his recovery. Hope was_abandoned Friday night by those attending_him. Dr. Santiago F. Bedoya, also first sec- retary of the embassy, who is at- tached as head of the Peruvian con- sulate at New York, pending naming of a successor to Edward Higgins, dean of that country’s consular service, who died last May, returned to the Capital early yesterday when the seriousness of his colleague’s condition became appar- ent. Dr. Bedova was a close friend of his fellow first secretary, by virtue of associations in the Washington embassy for several years. Burial Likely Here. Funeral arrangements were not an- nounced, but it was understood a pri- vate*Catholic service would be followed | by burial in Washington. Senor Buenavista, who was about 56 years old, was not married. He is sur- vived by three sisters, one, Mme. Mar- garet de Alvarez, noted contralto, who was believed here to be living in Eu- rope. Another sister lives in London, and the third in Buenos Aires. ‘The late embassy official started in the foreign =ervice of Peru as chancellor in the consulates of different European countries, later coming to New York o serve in the consulate. After five or six years in New York he was transferred {into the diplomatic service, coming to | Washington first in 1917 as second sec- retary of the embassy. In 1922 he was chosen as secretary to the mixed commission sitting in Wash- ington on the Tacna-Arica boundary | conferences, and three years later went {to Arica with the Peruvian delegation !'to ‘the Plebiscitary Commission. Promoted in 1927. Senor Buenavista was promoted to the position of first secretary in Wash. | ington in 1927, which post he held un- { til his death. He was charge d'affaires ad interim on two occasions, the last time from March 7, 1930, until the ar- rival of Manuel de Freyre y Santander as new Ambassador to the United { States early last month. | Senor Buenavista visited his home- land last in 1927. on his way back from Arica to take his post as first secretary | of the Washington embassy. His parents are not living. Senor Buenavista fa lowed his father in the Peruvian con- sular_service, and was awarded zwn\ medals for_distinguished _service—one [ called the Centennial of Independence | of Peru and the other the Centennial of Ayuch: | His years of service in Washington made “for Senor Buenavista many | friends in diplomatic and other official circles, particularly in the Latin Amer- ican corps. Many of these friends were | absent, on Summer vacations, but many | more joined in paying their respects (o | thelr late colleagu CITY NEWS IN BRIEF TODAY.
