SWEET SMELL ERA SOON IS FORECAST Many Disagreeable Odors Are Mixed to Make Pleas- ant Aromas. By the Associated Press. HAMILTON, N. Y, July 10.—Early arrival of a new era of sweet smells was forecast today by Dr. Donald A. Laird, head of the department of psychology of Colgate University. He foresees many of the widespread, disagreeable odors of industry turned into pleasant aromas through a re: cently discovered advance in the pe fumer's art. By this new method, in- | stead of using perfume to cover up bad smells, the evil odor itself is “put to work.” It is given as a companion a minute rcentage of some powerful chemical. 'he new partner, called an industrial aromatic, may be equally evil smelling, but the combination of the two bad odors produces a sweet or pleasant one. Industry, says Dr. Laird in a survey THE EVENIN G STAR, WASHINGTON, 8 Milwaukee advertising man, to learn how they ranked among customers. The worst was perspiration, garlic second, rubber third and kerosene fourth. Both rubber and kerosene, said Dr. Laird, now are coming upon the mar- ket in guises that no nose would recog- nize. He told of sprays whose effec- tiveness depends mainly upon kerosene and which, he said, are widely used in homes which would not tolerate them until kerosenes odor was “put to work” at making perfume of itself. Rubber's odor is likewise used &s the basis of new aromas, said Dr. Laird, but that he is not at liberty to name any of the new disguises. He credited Dr. Eric C. Kunz of Montclair, N. J., with leadership in the research 'establishing the methods of getting rid of smells. Kunz found four aromatics which would combine with a linseed oil odor in some artificial leathers so as to produce a pleasant sffect. ‘The same principle, Dr. Laird said, can be used to change disagreeable odors in rooms or auditorfums into | quite a variety of agreeable scen “New-mown hay"” is one of the resul But the art has not been developed to the point where it can be applied eco- nomically to open-air odors of the “gas house” type.
