Typos Prove Puzzle CHAMPS DEFEATED INFIRSTTWOTILTS Play of Government League Champs Varies With Pace Set by Mal Simons. BY FRANCIS E. STAN. HAT’S the matter with the Union Printers?” This question is in the minds of more than a few sandlot fans who have been following the Government League this year. The Typos, title-holders, have been beaten in their first two games. When the Printers dropped their first contest to Navy Yard, fans were not unduly excited—every team has its off days. But when Interstate bumped off | the Typos, fans wondered, “Just how good are the champs this year?” Ed Lowery offers just one explana- tion, this in the person of one Mal Simons. “As Simons goes, 50 goes the Printers,” explains Lowery. Mal is one of the most versatile players on the sandlots today. Originally a pitcher, Simons, when a shortage of pitchers struck the team, returned to the mound with more than fair success. He is the big sticker of the club, in- variably leading the league in batting. 2 and when he isn't pitching, Mal plays ‘5 a good game at second base. Manager Lowery is confident his club will have something to say about where the pennent goes this year and he Er:blbly is right. The Printers have ked good even in defeat. ‘What promised to be a serious threat for the unlimited title has been elimi- nated with the disbandment of the Liberty A. C. Failure of his players to show interest caused Pop Kremb to give up a club he has managed for the last 10 y Pop has no idea of giving up base ball, however. He will coach the First Reform Sunday School team which will play in the Insect class. When Kremb first took charge of the Liberties they ‘were playing junior ball. Perhaps in @ few years he will have the First Re- form boys up there batiling for un- limited class honors. i N Earl Moser is back in town after a year's absence. He will revive the |} Bond Clothiers team and enter it in the lndepende_nt title race. Showing that they are in earnest, Moser’s pla) ers will journey to Dorsey, Md., to the team of that plm m&d?}me- W | Heving,p.. tral player, Gordon, Theis, Thompson, filu.mey Dawsey, Pemberton and Rob- on.
