With the latest expansion of $130.- 000,000 in loans, which represented the larger accommodations granted by New York and out-of-town banks, as well as a substantial increase for the 'ac- count of “others,” the total gain in such Joans from the low point of January 22 amounts to $783,000,000. This means that about one-fifth of the total reduc- tion from the high level of October 2 has been recovered. Yields Become Lower. Between the high point of loans last Autumn and the date when deflation Wwas apparently completed there was a drop of $3,463,000,000, or 51 per cent. It is a striking fact that the percentage of decrease in loans almost exactly coincided with the percentage of aver- age decline in the generally accepted groups of stocks which establish the trend of the market. During the period when the public was buying securities for cash on a large scale loans steadily decreased. That era is now believed to have passed, for stocks have advanced into a price area where the investor is not attracted to them as he was {l’evlounly by the relatively low market valuations and the return available on stocks pur- chased. Many Issues Still Unsold. Consequently, the interest has been more of a speculative than of an in- vutment character, with borrowing to rry out stock market commitments and vl'.h 1t higher bank loans. Another factor is that of the enlargement of the offer- of new securities. At first these ‘were well placed and did not cause any great increase in bank borrowings. Latterly, however, there has been less demand for them, with many of the issues that came out toward the end of March still in the hands of the underwriters, who are undoubtedly car- rying them on bank loans and thereby increasing the total of so-called brokers’ In contrast with the expansion in these loans is the continued low figure of bills discounted at the Federal Re- serve. Such bills decreased again this week and are close to the low figure of the year, Compared with the high points reached by bills discounted on, July 10, 1929, there has been a reduc- tion of $940,000,000, or 85 per cent. ‘With one exception, that of 1925, such bills are at the lowest since 1918. Reserve Holdings Grow. ‘The Federal Reserve this week shows holdings of Government securities of $535,393,000. A year ago its portfolio of Government bonds, Treasury notes While there will probably not be whole-hearted agreement among pro- ducing interests, it is reasonable to as- sume that some improvement will re- sult, with supplies of crude rubber suffi- cient for all industrial needs. Domes- tic stocks, furthermore, should be re- duced because of smaller Malayan im- ports and increased consumption. ‘Tire manufacturers have been favored by the extremely low prices for crude rubber which have prevailed thus far this year, and with moderately higher prices a future prospect, inventory will be avoided. e CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET CHICAGO, April 19 (#) (United States Department of Agriculture).— Cattle—Receipts, 300 head; compared one week ago, better-grade weighty steers steady to 25 lower; others 25 off; all grades active at close on shipper count; light steers mostly 50 lower; light heifers and mixed yearlings 50a7 down, instances more; butcher heifers showing comparable downturn; fat cows and heavy heifers fully 50 lower; cut~ ter weak to 25 off; bulls 25a40 lowe vealers weak to 25 lower; heavy steers scarce; top, 14.75; few loads, 14.00a 14.50; specialty light steers and heifer yearlings, 14.50 and 13.25, respectively, but most light steers, 10.75a13.25; heifer yearlings and mixed yearlings, 10.00a12.25; bulk, fat cows, 700!025 few above 9.00; butcher heifers and heiferettes, 8.25210.00; cutter, 5.25a6:25; closln¢ top on sausage bulls, 7.75; se- lected vealers, 11.50; mostly 8.75a10.00 at close for 107 to 130 pounds. COAL TRAFFIC GAINS. BALTIMORE, April 19 (Speecial).— For the first time this year coal traffic on the Baltimore & "Ohio Railroad showed an increase in the final week of March, compared with a year ago. As this item accounted for about 30 per cent of the total volume of business originating on the lines, the indication is that the trunk line is turnin corner. Coal loadings in each of the last three weeks of March, however, ahnwed an increase over the pnvimu and certificates was $161,420,000. About 85 per cent of the Governments held are of a short-term character. ‘The present reserve ratio of the 12 Reserve bar| zank of New Yo k, however, is 76.3, mund with mor. year o (Coprright, 1930, BERLAND DIVIDEND.
