4 THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., APRIL 20, 1930—PART FIVE: City Championships Opening This Week Will Finish Greatest Duckpin Season PACINI, M’'GOLRICK URGED FOR PLACES IN BIG TEN Recreation Champ Carries Fat Averages in Two Leagues, Wins Other Distinctions—Meyer Davis Man Sets Record in Spares. BY R. D. THOMAS. HE greatest duckpin season in history swings into its final stage | this week with the opening of the men’s and women's city tournaments. Tuesday night the twentieth annual championships of the Washington City Duckpin Association will get under way at Con- vention Hall and on the following night the girls will start play at the Arcadia. With nearly 380 teams and an army of doubles and singles en- tered, it will require about three weeks to run off the men’s tourna- ment. The girls, with 51 teams, 85 doubles and 139 singles, will re- quire a week. The schedule for the first week of the men’s tournament and the entire line-up of the girls appear elsewhere on this page. schedule committees of both events honored every date re- quest and hope for. few changes. However, some are inevitable and those who find changes imperative should communicate with Arville Eber- sole, secretary of the men’s tourna- ment, at_ National 7280 or Nationai 1992, or Elsie .Romero, Adams 3215-J, secretary of the girls' affair, as the case may be. Mrs. Romero will remain home tomorrow and Tuesday to handle any such requests. Admirers of Ollie Pacini of the Grand Palace Valet team in the National Capital League and the Bearcats of the Recreation League, are advancing him as a candidate for a place among the “big ten” of the Washington City Duckpin Association. Very likely he'll be chosen. Ollie won the championship of the Recrea- tion League with an average of 119-20, one of the highest recorded this sea- son, and carried an average of 117 in the National Capital. Moreover he established a record by shooting two 400" sets on the same night, in a Recreation League doubl header, and he had two other 400 totals, one in the National Capital and the other in the King Pin No. 1 Sweep- stakes. Pacini, Clem Weidman and Howard Campbell were the “big three” among “400" shooters, each beating the much- shot-at mark four times. Ollie__distinguished himself other- wise, He won the Italian Sweepstakcs title with two brilliant performances, beating 600 twice, and he shot 638 to vanquish Louie Pantos in the Italian- Greek singles scrap. Pacini's ambition as a “head-to- head"” bowler was stirred by the victory over the redoubtable Pantos. This was his only individual match of the sea- son. Ollie has been egged into challenging Campbell and Weidman to singles com- bat and there is a strong probability that the “400” champions will clash. Some fans thought Pacini deserved a place in the “Big Ten” last season. He won the championships of two leagues with handsome averages, shot the highest set of the National Duck- pin Bowling Congress tournament at Richmond, 432, and finished fourth in the Campbell sweepsteaks. Another promising candidate for the gelect 10 is Joe McGorlick, of the Meyer Davis team. While Howard Campbell was sweeping on to an all- time record for average in the National Capital League McGolrick was almost keeping pace with him though the big Irishman attracted little attention. Campbell’s final avera to the figures presented Secretary Rollie Atkinson, was 121-17 for 81 games, and McGolrick's was 120~ 20 for 81 sirings, a scant point less. The Meyer Davis bowler beat the old record for a league season which was established last year by Bradlev Mand- ley with 119-44 in the District League. Georgie Friend, of Service Cafeteria, averaged 122-8 in the National Capital this season but he rolled only 21 games, only a fraction of enough to qualify for the title. Although Campbell beat McGolrick by a point the latter, in a sense, rolled elightly better duckpins. Two accu- rate shots are required, with rare ex- ceptions, to make a spare only one to get a strike. The element of luck figures strongly in ,the manufacture of a tenner. McGolrick outspared Campbell by nine marks and in doirg 80 hung up a record with a total 249. Campbell out-struck him by 65 to 53, making a d total of marks for C!n’llpbell of 305 against 302 for his rival. Weidman clinched a high ranking by winning the District League title with an average of 118-60 for 81 games but he was pressed. A point and & fraction behind him were no less than four sharpshooters. Jack Wolstenholme of the King Pins, George Friend of Northeast Temple, Red Morgan of Con- vention Hall and Brad Mandley of Cornell's Lunch, each topped 117 Friend and Mandley are former cham- plons of the District League. Morgan was the sensation of this or- ganization of experts through half the campaign, during which he set a pace of around 122. The outstanding team of the season is the King Pin crew, which won the Dis- trict League pennant and finished sec- ond in the National Capital. Both races were decided by two-game margins, with Grand Palace Valet Shop on top in the National Capital. Northeast Temple came from far behind to take runner-up honors in the District. The Recreation team won the Ladies’ District League pennant for the third straight season, but had a close shave. Toward the finish the John Blick girls pulled up close. In the deciding match the Recs proved their class by beating the Blicks two games to one. Rena Levy and Catherine Quigley put over the big punch for the champions. Rena averaged 103 and Catherine 101, Lorraine Gulli of the Arcadians had the high average of 105, but she rolled only 57 games, and the matter is open to argument whether this performance was as meritorious as Miss Levy's 103 for 96 strings. Lucy Owen of the John Blicks nosed out Mrs. Quigley for the runner-up £oot with 101-33 for 99 strings against 101-4. Lucille Preble of the King Pins and Helena Kohler of the Lucky Strikes each averaged 100 and a heavy fraction. These were the league's best bowlers 211 others who rolled a majority of the | scheduled games finishing below 100. The Recreations and Blicks easily were the class of the teams. This week’s matches will settle the ‘Washington Ladies’ League race. The Beeques, three-time pennant winners. are in front by one game, and will take on the Shamrocks in the final set. The second-place Columbians will meet the Hilltoppers. Should the Columbians lose the championship by one game & spare made by Catherine Moriarty of the Daughters of Isabella, will long be re- membered by them. Catherine made the spare in the last box to beat the Columbians a game and enable the Bee- ques to climb to even terms. With only three games arating first and sixth place and only three games to shoot, it's anybody’s pennant in the Southern Railway Clerks’ League. “This week Operation will meet Purchas- ing No. 1, Disbursing will take on Pur- chasing No. 2 and Auditors will meet Construction, Wot a wind-up! ‘There will be an exciting finish also in the General Counsel Men's League. With one set to go the Reds and Ath- .Jetics are tied for first place. . .., 3 'WOMEN'S BOWLING The ! A iy 2 TOURNEY SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23 TEAMS—7:30 P.M. lley. Class. Alley. Class. GALLAE;NIGHT RUNS FAST MILE IN TRAINING LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 19 (#).—Gal- lant Knight, one of the Kentucky Derby favorites, encouraged his followers to- day by covering a mile at Churchill Downs in 1.42, The brown colt was caught at the first quarter in 0:26, three-eighths in 0:39, half in 0:52, five-eighths in 1:05 and three-quarters in 1:172-5. Gallant Knight, In training here under Kay Spence, is owned by the Audley Farm End is by Bright Knight out of kthel ray. the INCEPTION DEFEATS TURF TOPNOTCHERS Captures Philadelphia Handi- cap on Muddy Track at Havre de Grace. By the Assoclated Press. NCEPTION, a 4-year-old gelding sporting the silks of Mrs. O. Cha- ney, conquered mud and eight top- notch thoroughbreds today to win the Philadelphia Handicap over the heavy Havre de Grace track. Matching strides with the best of the handicap division in training, the chest- nut son of Sporting Blood displayed a game bit of running to defeat the Aud- ley Farm's Bobashella by two lengths, with S. W. Labrot’s Dina Did Upset a neck away for third money. He step- ped the mile and one-sixteenth in the fast time of 1:52 1-5. Scratches riddled the original start- ing field, but eight 3-year-olds and up- ward chose to accept the issue, which meant $9,550 to the winner. The | largest crowd of the meeting, includ- | ing’ Vice President Curtis, saw Incep- tion revel in the bad footing, shake off Dinah Did Upset and Bobashella in a great stretch drive and then go on to win handily. The victory of Mrs., Chaney's entry netted his backers $30.40 for $2. Bobashella was made the favorite, with the Rancocas Stable’s Donnay, the heavily played second choice. Donnay, however, finished next to the last after recelving a bad ride from Jockey Stef- fen, contract rider for the Harry Sin- clair stable.
