BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Finantial Writer, NEW YORK, April 12.—The curb market was subjected to a moderate amount of week end profit-taking to- day, but operations for the advance were resumed in some of the utilities and specialties before the close. Mod- erate losses were numerous at the close, but a handful of issues were substan- tially higher. Trading slackened con- siderably from the fast pace maintained during most of the week. Electric Bond & Share gained more than 2 points, and American & Foreign Power warrants were bid up 4 points in the final trading. Hydroelectric se- curities sagged for a time, but rallied to close at 55, its high of the year, and up 1 point net. American Light & ‘Traction new stock dropped 3% points in profit-taking, but then rallied to close with a loss of less than a point. The United Gas stocks continued the rally which set in yesterday, the cer- tificates closing up about a point. Con- solidated Gas of Baltimore lost 2 points. The industrials and specialties were highly irregular. Fairchild was again a feature of the aviation issues, rising more than 2 points to a new high for the year at 10. This company is con- trolled by Aviation Corporation. Fok- ker, on the other hand, sagged. Deere new stock encountered considerable profit-taking, ending the day with a loss of a couple of points. Oils were dull and inclined to ease. Vacuum lost about a point, and Cities Service sagged fractionally. COMING WHEAT CROP IN CRITICAL PERIOD Southwest Is Chiefly Concerned With Prospects for This Season’s Harvest. Special Dispatch to The Star. KANSAS CITY, Mo, April 12— Naturally the attention of the South- west is just now centered on the com- ing wheat crop. This is its critical period and harvest is only 10 weeks away. High winds and extreme tempera- tures during the closing days of this week have damaged wheat in some sections. However, generous rains in the next few days will repair much of threatened loss and & crop above that of the last two years is yet possible. The present is the longest Spring drought in 15 years, The sustaining factor is moisture in months preced- ing it. !rex-s‘ Oklahoma and Kansas all have increased acreages over 1929, and there is allowance for a falling off in condition in localities, yet with a pos- sibility of a yield far exceeding last season. At present there is a need of soaking rains too long delayed, but which will, if they come soon, bring about a change of the situation for the better as concerns yield. While a waiting attitude has existed for the last month because of the un- certainty of the yield and the probable price level of the wheat belt, other things have been going on. One is the activity of the farms in Spring planting, which is taking up the slack in unemployment and is giving to the “arm country an earning power. To be suie, the producers are leaning heavily on the local banks to carry them until 4n income is at hand, but that is expected at this period. Likewise there is some dilatoriness in collection because of the lack of ready cash. Merchants complain that custo- mers _are demanding time. Implement and hardware men are carrying heavy shipments of harvest machinery, but purchases are delayed until the outcome of the fleld is assured. (Copyright, 1930.)
