J., who died about 1910, began his kite experiments in 1863. In 1894 he was one of a group of famous pioneers in kite flying for scientific purposes who condufifd investigations of the upper air with kites at Blue Hill Observatory, in ‘Massachusetts. Messrs. Rotch, Mar- vin, rguson and Clayton® of the Weather Bureau co-operated and with the help of the Smithsonian Institu- tion experiments were carried at alti- tudes as great as 12,000 feet. Eddy kites were successfully used for aerial photography and signaling during the Spanish-American War. ‘The type of kite with which Eddy's name is associated is a modified Malay kite, made of two sticks. It needs no tail and flies with remarkable steadi- ness. The two sticks are of equal length, although for use in light winds the cross-stick may be 1.14 longer than the vertical. The sticks are lashed to- gether at a point 18 per cent, or about one-fifth of the length, at right angles, and bounded by an outline string. Don’t fool yourself that you never Rave it. Because you simply cannot be sure of that. Halitosis never an- nounces itself to the victim. But it does to others—and offends them. Leave the covering slightly loose in the sections marked “D” and “E” to provide a keel surface in the center. e bridle is a single string, f-stened at points “A” and “€,” and long enough to reach to “B,” at which point the kite string is attached. After an Eddy kite—or, for that mat- ter, any type of kite—has been flown several times and then seems to loose its flying ability, the fault will be found in the stretching of the cover, particu- larly in the loosening of the side gus- sets. When these have been realigned, the kite will be restored. The ‘Eddy kite flies at a high angle and is steady. In regard to ease of con- struction combined with performance, the Eddy kite is, no doubt, the best and enjoys deserved popularity. Tomorrow—The Baden-Powell Kite.
