WWW“OWMOOOOQO““QOW“MOQQOQW““ ECLIPSE AIR STRATA Shadow of Earth Atmos- phere Will Be Scanned as It Moves Over Moon. By the Associated Press. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 11.—When | the moon goes under partial eclipse | about midnight tomorrow one Harvard | Astronomer will be watching through | ordinary fleld glasses. | e best second guesser would not dream what this scientist, Dr. Willard J. Pisher, looks for. His quest is not on the moon, but in the earth’s atmos- phere, and the shadow on the moon furnishes a rare opportunity for an almost_unique investigation. Dr. Fisher will time to a fraction of & minute the appearance of a slight haze on the edge of the moon. This haze is the portion of an eclipse shadow called the penumbra, not the true shadow of earth, but a wide circle of partial shadow that surrounds the earth’s black disc. The penumbra’s visibility varies un- certainly. Not all of this varying dura- tion has been accounted for by astron- omers and Dr. Pisher suspects that some of the fluctuations may be due to absorption of light in the earth's at- mosphere, ‘Tomorrow night's spectacle will be visible wherever the skies are clear throughout North America. The faint penumbra is due to begin at 10:43 p.m., Eastern standard time. The black umbra slides over the edge of the moon at 12:21 am. At 12:58 am. it covers its largest area, about one-ninth of the moon's face. At 1:36 the umbra ends. e “CERTAIN ROYAL LADY” CALLED SUITED TO FILM Mrs. Biography of !
