B—16 BYRD BARK S DUE. [ IN TAHITI TODAY| Mild Weather After Storm Provides Chance to Repair Ship. BY DR. FRANCIS D. COMAN. By Radio to The Star and the New York Times. ON BOARD THE BARK CITY OF NEW YORK AT SEA, April 11.—Due to arrive at Papeete, Tahiti, this eve- ning, the City of New York, with lazily flapping sails, is jogging northward through an oily sea of silver and blue. For the last two or three days mild weather has given us an opportunity to recover from the effects of the hurri- ! cane, Repairs have been made, cargo | has been restored and the decks and lower rigging are hung with salt-soaked blankets and clothing, washing out in the rain and drying between squalls in the tropic sun. Wednesday morning we passed over the line of the Capricorn and toward noon sighted the jagged hills of Rimi- tara, a small volcanic isle of the Austral group. Within a fringing reef of coral one saw the beryl green surf breaking in an unbroken crescent along a glis- tening beach lined with swaying cocoa- nut palms. From two miles off the Jow-thatched houses of the native vil- lage made a striking picture against the wtv}‘wi green of the lush tropical owth. “Ever since we left Tahiti 18 months ago we have looked forward to the re- turn visit. We know, too, that much as we want to get home, the longer we stay in this fragrant and colorful spot the less anxious we will be to leave it.
