+ committee headed by John P. Evans 105 AVERAGE SET Team Standings. L AS STAKES llMITL.,. : ,,uf"}f’,i"‘f';f°i";.um s Stars Out of Money Event Next Month. BY R. D. THOMAS. IG guns on the sweepstakes | front will be silenced for| three weeks next month when those of caliber take up the siege against the tricky maples. | = mr.m’: 3 Every bowler of either sex wh.h\ an average of less than 106 is in- vited to try for what promises to be fat prizes in the second annual | Bill Wood Sweepstakes. Last year first place was worth $150. second,” $100; third, $75; fourth, $50 and fifth, $25. Fifteen games will be rolled in five- game sets on March 8, 15 and 22 at the Lucky Strike, King Pip No. 2 and King Pin, No. 1. ' Each participant will be taxed 85 plus cost of games and all the entry dough will be dumped into the prize fund. It ought to be larger | this year than last, in view of a tre- mendous growth of interest in n\eep«l stakes competition. | An average of slightly less than 110 | was good enough a year ago to take | first money. Percy L. Patrick won with 1,646, Arthur L. Kleisath was second with ‘1641, Roland G. Morrisette third with 1,636, John H. Williams fourth with 1,620 and Frank A. McNey, fifth | with 1619. There were 80 participants. l Dates were selected not to conflict | with the National Duckpin Bowling tournament at Waterbury, Conn. Washington day in the national | classic will be Saturday, March 29. | The Bill Wood Sweepstakes, origi- nated by the promoter from which the event takes its name, is the only tourna- | ment in which bowlers other than stars have a chance for worth-while coin. A will pass on every entry and there will be no loophole for a star. It is within the committee’s power to bar a bowler of known exceptional ability who hap- pens to be carrying a low average in some league. Also the committee can 1dmit a bowler with no league afliation, if in its judgment the applicant is ot better than & “105” league shooter. CHIPS FROM THE MAPLES A flat game of 405 is among the achievements of the leading Nationals of the Independent Ladies' League. An epidemic of splits in the Com- mercial League the other night was blamed by Official Scorer Cy Burriss on an extreme switch in weather. Cold pins are said to be livelier than warm ones. Hiram Lodge has been touted all along as the team to beat for the Ma- sonic League pennant, so no excitement ‘was ecaused by its assumption of first place after beating Acacia 2 to 1. Fredericks’ 361 and Barrett's 351 did Acacia Ditle good. Larcombe of Brightwood Lodge MI 307 several weeks ago in the Masonic League and was only one pin shy of thls"h!n his team lost a match re- cently. e { Ralph Prevost shot a game-of 172 and | set of 392 for Southeast e records | and his team totaled 616 for another. With seven weeks of the campaign left the Pins hold a two-game lead in the District League, with North- east Temple second. The pennant may Dbe decided on the final night, April 11, with the King Pins as hosts to the ‘Temples at the Lucky Strike. Temple | also took three from Cornell. | en District League franchises are much | sought, and for that reason it is sur- prising that Petworth twice this sea- | son has forfeited. Mary Cox of the Queen Pins was the bright star of the District Ladies’ | League with a set of 354, including games of 106, 118 and 130. Mary made | 13 _spares and no_strikes. Elsle Fisher rolled 346 for Arcadia | against Lucky Strike. i Mille Russell's 141 stood out when the | King Pins gave the leading Recs a | two-to-one beating. By winning )2 slrlllhl games \he Columbians, captained by Rena Lev: have climbed to within a few per-| centage points of the champion Beeques | in the Washington Ladies’ League. The | Columbians cleaned up the Shamrocks | = |Morrison " and Commercials on one night. Tiedeman of General was high In the Office Equipment League for the week with a set of 379. Matson of Barbette and Shipley of Air Corps are dividing honors in the War artment League. Matson has the high average of 110 and Shipley is second with- 109, besid*s being sec- ond in spares and holding the top sel of 377, h scorers of the week in the | Merchants’ League were: Houck, 345; E. Hazel, 349, and Vitalé, 341. Lank- ford had the best game of 133. | Bureau ‘of Standards rolled 617 against Patents No. 2 for a War De- partment League record, Van Dusen's 148 and Stuart’s 133 helping a lot. U Street’s 1,658 displaced Mailing's 1,647 as high set in the Post Office | League. The rise of the Central team from the cellar to a place in the money is the season’s sensation in this loop. Central has used the same five men in every match except one. Milby rolled 344 to help his leading average of 105, and now has & tw point advantage over the distinguished | southpaw, Arlie Webb. Probably the only means of keeping Clarence Charest out of the sportshght uld be take away his right wing. He has no left. Charest is best known as a tennis player, but is nobody's set-up as bowler. Recently he established - all: time records for the General Counsel League with a game of 181 and set of 409. National Capital Press, iwice cham- pions of the Typothetae League, -has ousted Potomac Electrotype from the lead and the schedule from here - out looks easy to the men led by O. H. ‘Wright. Another title would give Na- tional Capital Press permanent posses- | sion of a trophy offered by the Typo- thetae of Washington. ‘Tony Gulli, captain of the Mount Vernons in the typo circuit, was leader of that team when Dave McCarty was a member in 1912 and shot his me- morable 182.
