CHALTENPSFACE FGHTFORBACKING Navy Parley and Arms Policy! Likely to Determine Gov- | ernment’s Fate. BY CAMILLE LEMERCIER. By Wireless to Tne Star and chicaso Daily PARIS, France, February 22.—The new Prench cabinet headed by the | leader of the Radical Socialist ptrty,} Camille Chautemps, will have to fight hard next Tuesday to obtain the right to live and it is likely that the vital issue will be the London Naval Con- ference and the government's disarma- ment policy. The Chautemps cabinet is pure Left, combining all the ministers belonging 1o those Left and Left Cénter groups | which were represented in the famous Cartel - cabinet of 1924 headed by | Edouard Herriot. Nearly Equally Divided. ‘As the Chamber of Deputies is nearly { equally divided between the Right and | the Left parties. with a small advantage for the Right, M. Chautemps must win the -full support of all the Left groups, r:muhrly of the Socialists, headed by | n Blum and Paul Boncour, and also obtatn the abstention of at least 20 or -30 members of those Center groups ‘which are under Andre Tardieu's direct influence. £s long as only home affairs are con- cerped, the Socialigts will fully support | Chautemps, -and, on the other hand, M. Tardieu has decided to play fair and give the new cabinet its chance. The situation may grow worse for Chautemps if, as I am informed, the Socialists to obtain from Chautemps assurance that the French delegation to the London Conference will not only foliow the general lines of Tardieu's naval policy, but will take the initiative for & “real disarmament policy.” Tardieu Would Fight Change. ‘M. Tardieu would immediately oppose such & change. He would give full ex- planations on the London negotiations and ask the Chamber clearly to state that the French policy cannot be re- versed. Thus Chautemps would be in an ex- tremely difficult position.. If he gives some assurance to the Socialists he will lose the necessary support of the center. If unaltered, he will lose the necessary support of the Socialists. In . any case, the cabinet will be greatly endangered. The fact is that except for the Socialists the Chamber is nearly unanimeus in backing the attitude of the French delegation at London. e LEVIA'I:HAN SELECTED FOR NEW LINERS’ NAMES Two Veseels of United States Lines to Be Christened for War- Time Craft.
