Howe had no intention to make an attack on our lines at the last- named place. 'HE corn borer failed to make more than the anticipated gains during the past year, and the country will have to take what comfort it can from that. The pest, which spreads about 20 to 30 miles a year, worked generally toward the South dur- ing the past year.
