FINANCIAL. STOCKS IN ADVANCE ON COVERING MOVE Market Retraces Part of Ground Lost in Decline of Friday. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL. Assoclated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, December 21.—Heavy week end covering by “bear” traders brought about a sharp rally of 1 to 10 points in today's brief session of the market, although the gains were not e S mTLe raced practically all groups of stocks, with a brisk demand for the railroad shares featuring the late trading. Publication of the official summary of the Interstate Commerce Commission’s revised consolidation plan probably ac- celerated the late demand for the rail- road shares, although many bankers and d executives believe that the final grouping of the country’s railroads will dlfler widely from the plan proposed. Union Pacific led the rally with a gain Dl 5 polnu while Atlantic Coast Line, e & O] Southern milwly. Wlbuh, Noflolk & Western and New York Central all closed with net ad- vances of 3 points or more. One of the most interesting develop- ments of the day's news was the an- nouncement of an increaes from 60 to 80 per cent in tin plate production this week. Otherwise, the day's business news was rather colorless in character. Today’s rally was regarded as a na- tural correction of a temporarily over- sold market condition. Columbia Car- bon, which broke 21 points yesterday, raliled 10 today. Auburn Auto advanced 8, Brooklyn Union Gas 7, and Safeway Stores, 512. United States Steel com- mon showed a net gain of 1 point at 163 after having crossed 164 and In- ternational Combustion preferred lost all but 13, points of its extreme gain of 7%2. Montgomery-Ward, which was the target of bear attacks yesterday, showed & net gain of 2%;. GURB PRIGES GAIN l AS SHORTS COVER! Substantial Rally Sets in Shorty After Opening of Session. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Assoclated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 21.—The curb market rallied substantially today, in further short covering after yester- day’s decline. Leading shares gnerally closed with net gains of around 2 points. Trading continued rather dull. Further selling appcared in spots during the profit-taking toward the close reduced most of the gains. Utllities led the upturn, in sympathy with the revival of bullish activity in this £T0up on the “big board.” Ameri- can & Foreign Power warrants closed more than 4 points higher, and such shares as Electric Bond & Share, Al- lied Power, American Gas, Middle ‘West and United Light A ntned about 2 points each. Hydro-Electric Secur- ities was a soft spot, closing fraction- ally lower. A feature of the day's activity was a transaction of 51,000 shares of Bellanca Aircraft at 45, a new low for the year. The stock has been comparatively in- active of late. It sold earlier in the year as high as 24, and touched 5 in the November break. The transaction represented more than one-fourth of the outstanding capital stock. Aviation shares generally continued sluggish, with Fokker easing a little. Such miscellaneous shares as New- mont Mining, Gulf Oil, Lehman Cor- poration, Trans America, Goldman Sachs, Citles Service and Otis Ele- vator new gained a point or two. Fox Theaters A touched a new low at | 5%, rebounded to 6!z, and clesed at| 53 Pennroad, which has been re- cenfly establishing new lows, rallied a lntersuh Equities continued heavy, touching & new low at 10. Niagara Hudson Power sold fractionally lower at another new low at 1115 Ford of Canada lnfl nzlfly a point. ASKS TOBACCO PARLEY. Retailers’ Spokesman Makes Pro- test Against Cigarette Prices.
