President and Mrs. Hoover Again Greeting the Public Socially at White House Dld-T;m'E"“CaLinet Days" Resumed—NotaHe Special Functions in Record—General Society Program Undergoing Revision. BY SALLIE V. H, PICKETT. HE President and Mrs. Hoover resumed their social life in the White House last week; there were real “old-time” cabinet days at home, several unusually interesting debut parties and dances, one or two ¥mlcmrly brilliant receptions and.lunch- ®on and dinner parties of more than usual importance socially, all combining to make a week of such brilliancy as has not been seen before this season. A DINNER in honor of the President and Mrs. Hoover was given by the Secretary of State and Mrs. Stimson, the first cabinet dinner for them in a long series yet to come. Several times there re guests dining at the White House, the largest dinner party be- g that of Wednesday night for the Japanese delegates to the ‘Naval Conference in London, and the dinner of Thursday night, an event that was arranged to take place just before official mourning was announced. FAM!LY life is setting in at the White House, to continue with little interruption until the New Year day reception. The house e.rr& will not be a large one, Mr. Allan Hoover coming from Har- ard, and Mrs. Hoover’s sister, niece and nephew, Mrs. Large, Miss | glan Jean urg and Mr. Delano Large, being the only ones yet scheduled. The cabinet homes will claim Christmas guests and few indeed re the households that cannot boast of at least a half dozen ung visitors from school. Wl-ul.! last week’s social program was well divided between of- i ficials, diplomats and official society folk, with many debut parties and a brilliant ball or two, it is this week that the sprightly atmosphere of yeuth will provide the entire social scheme, and while there will a few dinner parties for the more staid element, youth in its teens will run riot. Christmas night brings the mid- shipman-cadet ball at the Mayflower, and the night after Christmas 4s the junior holiday dinner dance at the Willard Hotel, when Mrs. Richard 8. Aldrich, Mrs. Chandler Anderson, Mrs. Ann Archbold, Mme. Ekengren, Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, 3d; Mrs. Pendleton Mayo, ‘Mrs. Eugene Meyer, jr.; Mrs. Arthur O’Brien, Mrs. Lindsay Russell, M{:*WIIWI' R. Tuckerman and Mrs. McCook Knox form the com- mittee. MR& HOOVER is gracefully assuming, not only the works of mercy she carried on during the war in Washington and while Bhe was a cabinet lady, but is adding the manifold things that fall $o the First Lady of the Land at Christmas time and is dispensing charity for several institutions. She was the delightful visitor at fixe permanent rummage sale carried on in Tenth street one day st week and bought two dolls, one to be left as a lure to other buyers and one to take back to the White House, presumably for el dainty Peggy Ann Hoover, her granddaughter. IN visiting from cabinet home to cabinet home last week—and indeed the whole city seemed to turn out—one found a real atmosphere of old-time hospitality such as obtained before official women got to wrangling over who should call on who. In every home there was a dainty tea table, some times large and some times small, but always ladened with flowers and dainties set out on handsome lace cloths, all of the cabinet hostesses except Mrs. Stimson using their dining rooms for accommodating the hungreds of visitors who called. OF the important events scheduled for early January, nothing is of more general interest than the return to Washington of ‘William Gillette, at the National, for the week of January 6, and whose reappearance in New York aroused Nation-wide enthusiasm. Grand opera never opened on a more important audience than that L which has already engaged boxes, blocks of seats and even single ats. From the White House and the President’s executive family 1 through diplomatic and official ranks, reservations have been pnd are being made. 11' is an unquestioned compliment to be asked to become a mem- ber of the Washington International Assembly, with its atmos- Phere of staid residents, the board of governors embracing a list of women who have long been known in Washington society.
