Foreign Vessels Are Used. ! | Names of _Government employes | fraveling at Government expense on vessels that do not fly the American flag are demanded from all Government | » departments under a resolution intro- duced today by Representative Fred A. Britten of Illinois, chairman of the | House naval affairs committee. This | Tesolution would also require the de- | partment heads to furnish the names of the ships, port and departure, | amount paid out by the Treasury for | such trip and the reasons for not traveling on an American boat. The_ total amount thus paid out by | the Treasury for traveling _expenses | during the past fiscal year is aiso sought by Chairman Britten. I am inclined to beli said Mr. | Britten, “that the Jones-White law, Which 'promotes travel on american | ships by United States officials and em- + ployes, is too often winked at under va- rious subterfuges. 1 “It is an open secret that operators | of foreign steamship companies employ | e >ry means to induce American offi- o cials to use their lines. even to the ex- | tent of issuing free passes to the offi- cia: and his family. Of course, this trick of getting big business is imme- diately heralded abroad. and the official unwittingly becomes an advertising | medium. i “If Secretary Stimson and the other delegates to the London naval confer- | ence cannot find an American ship pa- | latial enough for this illustrious group | of Americans, then I suggest that Sec retary of the Navy ber of the delegation, assign a first- | class battleship, with proper escort, to | take them into London Harbor.” Office and Warehouse 1845 4th St. N.E.
