THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY. DE CEMBER 16. 1929. 19 SIX ARE ELEVATED 10 CARDINALATE Italians Are Outnumbered, 33 to 30, for First Time Since 14th Century. 1@y the Associated Press. ” VATICAN CITY, December 16—Six new cardinals were created by Pope Pius XI today in a secret consistory. In his allocution, read to the assembled | College of Cardinals at the beginning of the ceremony of creation, he stressed the recent happy solution of the “Ro- man question.” He emphasized that the lateran pacts *recognized publicly the civil prinee- ship of the Roman Pontiff and safe- guard our dignity and yours.” Three Are Non-Italians. Three of the new cardinals are non- Itallans and three Italians, bringing the sacred college up to a strength of 63 out of a possible 70. After today’s | ceremony the so-called “foreign” cardi- nals were in a majority of those, their | number being 33 against the Italians’| 30. This is a disparity that has not existed since the end of the fourteenth | century. His “allocution concluded, the Pope #ct forth the merits apd achievements of each of the new cardinals. After each proposal of & name he paused and asked for their elders’ approbation. The cardinals present in the consistory hall answered by a mere lifting of their red caps in sign of assent. List of New Cardinals. The six thus elected to the sacred | college were Archbishop Cerejeira of Lisbon, who has the title of patriarch, .And the following archbishops: Laviatra- no of Palermo, Sicily; Minoretti of Genoa; Macrory of Armagh, St. Pat- | rick's original see in Ireland, and Ver- | dier. newly named to the see of Paris, recently made vacant by the death of | Cardinal Du Bois, and Monsignor Eu- | genio Pacelli, papal nuncio to Berlin The Pope also announced appoint- ments of several archbishops and bish- ops, most of whom had already been nominated by papal briefs in the course of the year. Among the appointments announced was that of Monsignor Joseph Albers of Cincinnati to become auxiliary bishop. SUSPECTED LEADER OF TERRORISTS HELD Balt Lake City Authorities Arrest Man Accused of Inaugurating Fatal Hold-ups Last Night. By the Assoclated Press. SALT LAKE CITY, December 16.— Police today held a man whom they believe responsible for a reign of terror on the west side of the city last night in which two persons were shot, sev- eral robberies committed and women &ubjected to indignities by the robber. Louis Marendo, 24, was in the county hospital under guard, seriously wound- ed by detectives’ guns, and Mrs. Cora Sloman, 35, shot by Marendo in a hold- up, was less seriously injured, with a bullet in her hip, Marendo was shot by detectives when he fired upon them after terrorizing residents of several rooming houses and private homes. Marendo held up and robbed five persons at the Sloman home. Mrs. Sloman was shot when Marendo firea three shots as her husband dashed for the front door to call police. MuUSI1C. i DOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. The Boston Women's Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the celebrated Ethel Leginska, was heard in Consti- tution Hall Saturday night in an ex- ceptional program, under the sponsor- &hip of Mrs. Wilson-Greene. In a program made up of Wagner, Schubert and Liszt, the works of the two latter composers were given the most impressive performance. The ‘Wagner number, which opened the pro- gram, the overture to “Mastersingers of Nuremburg,” was played so it conveyed the buoyancy of Wagner's one light opera. It sketches the pompous life of the upper classes, next the spirit of the ciass which evolved the folk songs, then the spirit of the lovers of all classes. “The description is strong in its sim- plicity. Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” | was especially delightful as interpreted by the excellent musicians under the direction of Miss Leginska. The “Hungarian Fantasy,” of Liszt, was played as well as conducted by Miss Leginska. Essentially written for piano, this work allowed the talented con- ductor to express herself fully through this medium. It is a song. or a series of songs, more or less apart from the more “stupendous” type of symphony music. It becomes at times a dance tune, though it is umswerving in jt< melodiousness. Miss Leginska won much applause. The program included a composition by Miss Leginska—"“Old King Cole.” ‘The audience demanded a repetition. ‘The concert program ended with rendi- tion of Liszt’s symphonic poem, “Les Preludes.” Sentimental in tone, this music rounded out a program thor- ougtly deserving of the large audience that greeted it.
