THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. . AVIATRICES FORM NATIONAL GROUP Licensed Woman Pilots Plan “Friendly Competition” With Men in Air. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 16.— “The Eighty-Sixes” — the first national or- ganization of licensed woman pilots in America, and credited with being the first in the world—has just been organ- ized here. o " 1 i e | e I oy Bl Yoo | s iHamphrey Injured Wiheny fers to their number—their ages vary Irom 18 to 40 The purpose of the organization, ‘which was formed at the home of Mrs. George Kunz, wife of a New York Jeweler and a licensed pilot, is “to pro- mote good fellowship among licensed ‘woman pllots, encourage flying among women and create opportunities for women in commercia] aviation.” Its headquarters will be in New York and its membership will bs open to any licensed woman pilot in the United States, ‘Within its ranks are some of Amer- ica's best known aviatrices; amon, them, Amelia Earhart, Ruth Elder (Mrs. Walter Camp, jr.), and Viola ‘Gentry. The first thing the Eighty-Sixers are going to do in their program of promot- ing women in aviation is to wage a little war on the “sex complex” in the air world. “Just because an aviatrix is ¢ wom- an is no reason why she shouldn't re- ceive as good as position or as much pay as an aviator,” they say. “There is no reason why men and women shouldn't compete in the air in a friendly fashion just as they do on land.” They se- lected the following sectional chairmen 1o preside over various districts in the country: Gladys O'Donnell, West Coast; Phoebe Omlie, Middle West; Joan Shankle, New England; Louise Thaden, Pennsylvania; Blanche Noyes, Ohio and ‘Michigan; Laura Alexander, Southeast section, and Margaret Thomas, Texas. These sectional chairmen will act as the governing body. No officers have as yet been selected, but three have been chosen for ballot- ing for each office. Their names will be submitted for vote by mail to the members and the result announced in the near future. Blanche Noyes, Mrs. George Kunz and Louis Thaden were the three ten- tatively selected for president. Mrs, Kunz, meanwhile, is serving as tem- porary chairman. CHICAGO U.
