20 135C0UTS HONORED FOR SAVING LIVES | Gold Medals Are Awarded Youths Who Saved 16 From Drowning. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, December 16.—The Na- tional Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America yesterday an- nounced awards of gold honor medals to 13 Scouts who risked their lives to save the lives of others. ‘The awards went to Henry C. Dean, 19, and Robert Brooks, 14, Magnolia, Minn.; Charles Bleler, 14, Jersey City, N. J.: Leonard Banyea, 16, Windsor, Vt.; Franklin Hearn, 17, Toledo, Ohio; John Rothfuss, 17, Sylvania, Ohio; Raymond Phipps, Yakima, Wash.; Hu- bert C. Patterson, jr., 14, Albemarle, N. C.; Roy Hal Teeves, 17, Arthur, IL.; How: K. St. Thom: 16, Foxboro, Mass.; Joe Brashears, 18, Rockwood, Tenn.; Bob Couch, 16, Redondo Beach, Calif,, and George Sherman, 15, West Agawam, Mass. Rothfuss Saved Two Girls. The national court said the most un- usual rescue was effected by Rothfuss, who single-handedly rescued Alice and Sophia Jankowswi after they had sunk in Gerald Lake, a quarry pool at Syl- vania, Ohio, on May 29, and then re- vived' Alice after a half hour’s appli- cation of artificial respiration. Dean and Brooks saved three young Scouts and tried, although unsuccess- fully, to save their scoutmaster from drowning after a boat capsized in In- dian Lake, Minn. Bieler rescued Eileen Carter, 9, and her father from drowning off Atlantic Highlands, N. J., last Summer and re- vived both by artificial respiration. Banyea saved Leslle Harrington, 14, from drowning in Silver Lake, Vt. Hearn saved Miss Mildred Corbett from the Raisin River after she and another girl had been thrown out by & practical joker. He spent an hour in a successful effort to revive her. Phipps saved Elwood Sires, 11, from drowning in the Yakima River. Tenderfoot Rescues Boy.
