ALCOHOL WASTE IS PUT INTO USE “Dry lce” and Fertilizers Are | Made to Pay as By-prod- ucts Through Science. Modern industry demands that there be a minimum of waste and the neces- ity for economic production has ereated an unlimited field for experimentation. but there are few industries in which waste has been' so completely utilized in production of by-products as that of industrial alcohol manufacture. In making the industrial or denatured | ethyl alcohol, black strap molasses has | been found by most companies to be the best raw material for manufacture. It is a curious fact, as shown by a report of the Industrial Alcohol !nmtutr that this raw material after fermentation and distillation, is returned to the soil, in part, in the form of potash fertilizer | after making an almost complete cycle | .of usefulness. Waste Material Utilized. Industrial alcohol has more than 400 | distinct uses. Recovery of the refuse | sludge, which was the waste m-uml‘ before the recent experiments pointed the way to its utilization, has resulted in | the introduction of many additional | uses in the form of by-products, One thousand gallons of black strap molasses, which is a_by-product of su- ar refining. represents about 400 gal- ons of industrial alcohol, as well as 2000 pounds of potash, 75 pounds of ammonium sulphate and 1.2 gallons of fusel oil. All these by-products haye various and important uses, Market for Carbon Dioxide Grows. Carbon dioxide may be compressed and marketed, either in cylinders or in solid form as “dry ice,” a product meet- ing withs increasing success on today's market, or in connection with the man- ufacture of carbonated soft drinks. In- creased use of carbon dioxide solved & serious economic problem inasmuch as this gas forms the largest part of the by-product of industrial lleohol manu- facture. ‘The sludge left rfter industrial alco- hol manufacture is processed to obtain potash and ammonium sulphate, valued as fertilizers. Fusel oil, another by-product, is used as "s.u'zh or after tgl)l'niel’xll.:l’x to amyl ace or any other amyl produ useful as solvents. y e Yeast cultures are the fermentation “I hardly know how to' act in a house,” | moved out of a one-way apartment. Another fine thing about the moth- ers of yisterday—they knit when they gosslped (Copyright, 1929.) small test tubes, their action being watched closely through soveral differ- ent stages during which they are grown successfully in 2-liter flasks, 25-gallon, 1,000-gallon and 51,000 gallon tanks. Black strap is pourde into 1250,000- gallon fermentation vats after mixing with water to reduce it to-fermentable strength. This mixture approximates three and three-quarter parts water and one part molasses. The solution tests about 4 per cent yeast when finally ready for fermentation. ‘The fermentation begins slowly and nlter a few hours the solution appears to be boiling, due to the quantity of carbon dioxide produced. At the end of the period of fermentationgapproxi- mately 48 hours later, the " solution, known as “beer,” tests 7 or 8 per cent alcohol by volume. High Wines From “Beer.” ‘The vapors from the fermenters, cluding the carbon dioxide and some cohol, are passed to a purmutlnn 8y tem, where they are “washed” and the alcohol recovered and where charcoal purifiers remove undesirable products. ‘The purification process yields 5,000 to 0 g-llans nt :leohcl monthly in the igents used in the production of alco- | I hox The yeasts are first introduced in ol ol e——=]a]———[o[———[o]——=[o][c——=u| ‘; HARRY KAUFMAN The Store for Thrifty People $19.75 to $24.75 Transparent Velvet Frocks & 2-Pc. Solids in Sludge Built Up. The sludge left after the distillation is piped back to the fermentation vats. where it is used as water in the origin: eral times. The solids.in the sludge are thus built up until, after several returns to the vats the mixture contains 8 to| 10 per cent solids when it is profitable to recover them. The sludge is then put through a process of evaporation, and the resulting base Is about 50 per cent solids. The sludge then is put into huge in- cinerators and burned.
