- TOORINFROGRES ;‘;lrty Makes Inspection in nne Arundel, Calvert and : Prince Georges Counties. W.a Staft Correspondent of The Star. BOWIE, Md., November 7.—Under adership of the State and extension resters, a number of farmers, business men and wardens Tuesday inspected & group of tree plantations in Anne Arundel, Calvert and Prince Georges Counties. The tour was arranged by the State department of forestry and the University of Maryland extension serv- ice for the purpose of encouraging the| Elgtlfll of timber trees on uncultivated | nd. Among the plantations shown per- | gons making the tour was a row of tulip poplar trees on the Belair farm Which is believed to have been set out in 1754. Most of the plantations visited, however. were of loblolly pine, dating back only a few years. It was pointed | out that these trees showed an average | wth of 31, feet a year,® although e tree was pointed out which had attained the unusual height of 14 feet since 1926. Two women land owners ere included in the party, which rted at Huntington, Calvert’ County, and ended on the grounds of the State Colored Normal School here. T Officials _who_ conducted the tour Were: F. W. Bosley, State forester; | Pred B. Trenk, extension forester; Wal- ter J. Quick, jr., district forester; J. B Morsell, Calvert County agent: S. E. y. Anne Arundel County agent: P. E. lark, Prince Georges County assistant agent, and Robert O'Keefe, district for- est warden. - . DESSAU, Germany, November 7.— The G-38, a giant new 3,200-horse- power Junkers monoplane, believed to| be the largest land plane yet con- structed, yesterday completed its first trial flight successfully. | Its wings, which measure 150 feet from tip to tip, have a tapering arrow shape that gives the ship an appear- ance of lightness, but is considered by the Junkers engineers to be the strong- | est and steadiest type yet achieved. | The height of the airship is more than 16 feet and its length is about 75 | feet. It is equipped with Junkers mo- tors, two central ones of 700 horsepow- er each and two outer ones of 400 horsepower each. The wings measure more than a man’s height between their upper and lower coverings where they join the fuselage, thus leaving space for me- chanics to walk entirely around the | motors and constantly supervise them. Another feature is a landing gear equipped with brakes on a rear wheel, used instead of a tail skid. This fea-| ture makes the G-38 a preliminary or experimental step toward the great “tailless plane,” the G-1000, which has been one of Prof. Junkers' favorite dreams and which he sketched in des tail in aplying for the necessary patents as early as 1910. Lms Moon Does Not Affect Crops. The old-time farmer had a deeply- rooted idea that crops grew all the bet- ter for having been planted on certaln phases of the moon. That idea has per- sisted among some until this day, and in order to determine the matter defi- nitely the Weather Bureau has gone to the extent of making observations with the possible effect of the moon in view.
