NEW YORK, September 14.—Ameri- ean capital, striding on seven-league boots in the ‘wake of recent aviation ! conquests, has invaded the Canary Islands to purchase the entire power and light system of those specks in | the ocean, 60 miles off the northwest conast of Africa, it was learned today. A Wall street investment house has virtually completed negotiations to take | 3 over the island public utilities for a % sum in the neighborhood of $2,000,000. ‘The transaction marks the first large American investment in the territory. ‘Westernization of power and light, however, is regarded as a prelude to further exploitation of the islands, which for jyears have depended almost entirely upon .more, or less primitive agricultural methods in the harvesting of important fruit crops. Canaries Virtually Ignored. ‘With the ‘exception of oil company representatives and automobile agencies the Canaries have been virtually ig- nored by American capital. Invest- ment in fruit ranches and vineyards has been sponsored lergely by Spanish interests, for Spain owns the territory, and the bulk of the wine, sugar cane and other products grown and manu- factured there has gone to European markets. ‘The ‘power and light systems, now largely concentrated in the principa islands of Tenerife, Grand Canaria an Palma, may be extended to the fou smaller. islands of Gomera, Ferro, Fuerteyentura and Lanzarote onte American interests have taken over control. Recently the islands have come into popularity, largely through the part they have played in transatlantic | flights over -the southern route from Spain to South America. The Barber Steamship Lines, which operate regu- lar service to the Canaries, have ob- served & growth in the tourist trade and the Island of Tenerife has been popular for some time among Euro- | pean vacationists. | Manufacturing Is Negligible. Spain acquired the islands in the , fifteenth - century, when production of | wine was the principal industry. In the nineteenth century, however, a disease of the vines reduced the output, and since then production of fruits, tobacco and cochineal has become of more importance. ‘The manufacturing industry is negli- gible arid communication among the islands is principally by sailboat. In 1910 the population of all the islands ‘was nearly 500,000. ALCOHOL IS SEIZED. Hertford Place House Is Raided in | Compjaint of Neighbors. Sergt.
