PORTLAND, Oreg., July 11.—The speed and pressure of modern life were blamed by speakers before the Ameri- can Medical Association Congress here yesterday for many physical ailments. Dr. Joseph Eckel, Buffalo, N, Y., psy- chiatrist, declared that daily ekcitement not only affected the mind but that mental disorders due to the pressure of environment “may actually produce deafness, blindness or gastric serious | symptoms. | Studies at the Cornell University clinic of patients suffering from ail- ments of the digestive system brought on by emotional strain were presented by Dr. George S. Stevenson of New York. The pace of modern educational methods was deplorsd by Dr. Lloyd Mills of Los Angeles, who declared that its speed was not only conducive to ill- health but also made accurate thinking impossible. s Dr. Guiseppe Caronia of the Royal University of N s, Italy, described a new treatment for typhoid fever. Dr. Lovell Langstroth of San Fran- cisco told the congress that while most Americans had advanced beyond the fried potatoes, sweet desserts and pie breakfast diet, the liking for menus conducive to degenerative diseases re- mained. The speaker declared that out pf 501 ailing persons studied, 88 per cent, had been living on a diet chiefly of bread, meat, potatoes, sweet desserts and other foods poor in vitamins. Many of them improved on a diet of milk, fresh fruits and vegetables, he said. IBN SAUD IS BELIEVED FACING ARAB UPRISING Report Reaches Jerusalem That Three Powerful Tribes Have Defied King of Hedjaz. By the Associated Press. JERUSALEM, July 11.—Reports were published here yesterday that Ibn Saud, ous uprising in the Nejd, and also pos- erful Arabian tribes—the -Ajmann Ateiba and Mutair—had ‘formed a cons federation against him. It was said the rebels had{occupied | Taraba, an important strategieal point, whence they had launched an attack |upon Ibn Saud's forces. A sanguinary | battle ensued, in which several of the {rebel sheiks were killed &?d three others were captured and exécuted. The rebels, however, rallied, the re-| ports added, and by fresh attacks gained a great victory and compelled Ibn Saud's soldiers to flee to Riyadh, capital of the Nejd. British sources here admitted the gravity of the insurrection, but felt| confident that Ibn Saud would be as| successful in dealing with it as he was with the uprisings in 1916 &nd 1918. o ACTRESS’ FATHER DIES. UNIVERSAL WIRELESS APPEALS FEDERAL ACT Radio Commission’s Order to Form | Single Press Corporation Is Complained Of. ‘The Universal Service Wireless, Inc., yestreday filled with the Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia a notice of appeal of the action of the Federal Radio Commission of June 20, 1929. The order complained of requires an individual group of press applicants for short-wave radio frequencies for the handling of press communications to form a single public'utility corporation, to be opened to all the press of the country on an equal basis. ‘The applicant is the subsidiary cor- poration formed by the Hearst news- papers and news services to accept a grant of short waves unconditionally and previously made to it December 22, 1928 At this time, the corporation states, the commission ordered also the issuance of construction permits to per- mit work on the erection of stations to proceed. These permits never have been issued, although requested. ‘The subsequent order of June 20, 1929, it is contended, is a direct nega- tion and violation of a previous and binding order, the form of which was entirely satisfactory to all press in-.| terests. ‘The notice of appeal is signed on be- half of the Universal Service Wireless, Incorporated, by Attorney Wilton J. Lambert, Rudolph H. Yeatman and Austin F. Canfleld of Washington; John F. Neylan, general counsel for the Hearst Corporation, and John D. Cos- tello of San Francisco, who slso is presi- dent of the complaining corporation. NEW COURSES OFFERED. CHICAGO, July 11.—A blood trans- fusion was performed early today to save the life of Miss Dorothy Wilson, debutante daughter of Milton Wilson, a director of Wilson Bros., manufac- turers. Miss Wilson was critically injured esterday when her motorcar was struck gy an automoblile driven by Miss Helen Hertz, 19-year-old daughter of John Hertz, former president of the Yellow Cab Co. Miss Hertz faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and is at liberty on her own recognizance. Evanston police were told that Miss Hertz drove through a stoplight, ram- ming the Wilson car. Both machines were wrecked. Chief Freeman said that should Miss | - Wilson’s injuries prove fatal the charge against Miss Hertz would be changed to_manslaughter. Miss Wilson made her debut in North | Shore society last Winter, but with her parents she has been living in Santa Barbara, Calif. Her present | visit here was at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. E. BINGHAMTON “LION” HUNT KEEPS OFFICERS ON HOP Maybe It's a Dog, but Something, Running at Large, Like Citizens, Alarms Countryside. By the Associated Press, BINGHAMTON, N. Y., July 11.—A “lion hunt” is keeping Binghamton po- lice, Broom County sheriff’s men and eight State troopers on the jump here. For three days the object of the search, whatever it is, has been the cause of much activity hereabouts. ‘The sheriff’s office reported that the search for the alleged African jungle beast, first seen in the hills near this city Monday, had become confused by a number of conflicting descriptions of the animal and its whereabouts. Jerry O’Connell, living here, going home yesterday through the city streets, saw what he was positive was a lion and did not stop running, he told po- lice, until he reached their headquar- ters. A special detachment of police, armed with riot guns, dashed out in search of Leo, but he was not sighted. The first belief of city and county officials that the “lion” was a dog was strengthened today when an unidenti- fled woman in Utica reported to police that in the environs of this city early the week she lost a police dog clipped look like a lion. in to MT.
