BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Pinancial Editor. NEW YORK, July 11.—Persistent selling for both accounts again de- pressed a wide range of issues in today's stock market, but operations for the advance, centering in the utilities, car- ried the general list irregularly higher. Failure of the call loan rate to g0 below 9 per cent, and uncertainty as to what may be expected from the weekly brokerage loan statement, due to appear after the close of the market, caused some uneasiness and induced profit-taking and lightening of com- mittments. Demand for utility stocks continued during the last hour, but late quota- tions registered the lowest figures of the day for some of the oils and motors, Atlantic Refining losing 5 points, Chesapeake & Ohio was up 7 W a new high at 251, with Midland Steel products preferred up 16 to 294, while galus of from 3 to 5 points wete made by United Corporation. United e o cTeIce ot Amrican Power & Light. The closing was irregular. Irregularity at Opening. Some irregularity persisted at the opening, but the main trend was up- ward. United States Steel sagged a point and General Electric nearly 2 points, but Pere Marqueite and Amer- ican Rolling Mills each mounted more than 4 points, the lalter to a new high !record at 122, Purity eries gamed points and Pullman, Pacific Lightin and Kroger Groceries each sold & poin higher. Pressure against radio was renewed, the issue sagging 2 points in the open- ing deals, and American Radiator and | Standard Gas & Eleciric, which have recently reached new highs, sagged 1. and 2 points, respectively, in realizing Montgomery Ward and Granby Coppfr each lost a point. Sentiment appeared -to be predomi- | nately bullish, however, and about core of issues were sent up 1 to 9 poin: in the first half hour. Credit was e | pected to improve, although the bani are still understood to be heavily in- debted to the Federal Keserve Bank. No | great change is looked for in the brok- erage loan total, to be anncunced after | the cle a2lthough with last week’ | total within $24.000,000 of the record of March 20. there is a possibility of a | new high record being recorded. Wail | Street, however, is more inclined to look for a small decrease rather than an in- crease in loans Early Features. Auburn Auto was tossed up 9 points | on top of yesterday's gain of nearly 18 and Eastman Kodak was quickly bid up {more than 6. National Biscuit and | Remington Rand rose a point and more | to new high ground. United Corpora- tion mounted more than a point in re- sponse to the huge gain in the market value of its treasury holdings, as di closed 1n its application to list more stock. Among other issues rising 1 to 1'3 points were American Telephone, Beth- lehem Steel, Wright Aero, Air Reduc- tion, Mathieson Alkali, Ludlum Steel, Sears Roebuck. Real Silk Hosiery. Union | Carbide and International Match pre- ferred. Foreign exchanges were inclined” to ease, with sterling cables 1-16 lower at $4.851-16. again getting down_toward | the incoming gold point. The Bank of England, however, made no change 1n its discount rate and it is expected ths the rate will be pegged at a point whick will protect the bank's gold reserve.
