40 . KANSAN 5 URGED FORFARM BOARD Secretary Hyde Confers With Supporters Who Want A. L. Hartshorn. b By the Associated Press. ST. JOSEPH, Mo., July 11.—Arthur M. Hyde, Secretary of Agriculture, con- ferred here last night with representa- tives of Kansas farm organizations who are urging the appointment of A. L. Hartshorn of Ford, Kans, to the Fed- eral Farm Board. The representatives declared that Hartshorn, who is vice president of the Kansas Co-operative Grain Dealers’ Association and the Kansas Co-opera- tive Grain Commission Association, has the support of every Kansas farm or- ganization, as well as much support from surrounding States. Secretary Hyde said that the par- ticular difficulty in the selection of a man for the wheat post on the board was that two marketing groups were not in accord. He said that the two factions, one favoring co-operative marketing and the other favoring the pool plan, were at loggerheads, and in- dicated that no appointment would be made until the two factions reached an agreement. “Farm relief is already working,” Secretary Hyde said. .“It has been functioning since Congress recessed. So far its effect has been largely psycho- logical. The present plan, when it dc- comes adjusted for regulating mark ing, will be a satisfactory and perma- | nent plan, I believe. The Farm Board constitutes a body of supervising engi- | neers in charge of the reconstruction of agriculture. It has taken farm re- lief forever out of the hands of poli- ticlans.” IN HUMAN TOUCH Hold Manner Practiced by Ameri- cans Would Increase Popu- larity of Statesmen. By the Associated Press. MUNICH. —If German statesmen would cultivate the human touch in the manner practiced by Americans in pub- lic life, they would gain in popularity, in the opinion of the Sueddeutche Sonn- tagspost. This illustrated weekly submitted the photographs of five prominent Germans to 50 men and women in various walks of life and asked them to identify the subjects. The persons depicted were Hermann Mueller, chancellor of the Reich; Heinrich Held, premier of Ba- varia; Hjalmar Schacht, president of the Reichsbank and chief German delegate to the reparations conference in Paris; Ludwig Haymann, boxing champion, and Harry Liedtke, a movie actor. Of the 50 persons tested, only three recognized Schacht and only four knew Chancellor Mueller. Eleven recognized Held, 26 named Haymann and 42 iden- tified Liedtke. Among those interrogated were a saleslady, & chauffeur, a street car con- ductor, a butcher, a minister, a painter, the owner of a souvenir shop, a photog- rapher, the janitor of the Bavarian finance ministry, a bar maid, a_mes- senger in the State Secretary's office, & detective and a newsboy. The only one who identified them all correctly was a law student, Next came a porter at the railway station, who recognized all except Schacht. The Sonntagspost derives the fol- lowing moral from its experiment: “The trouble is that our leading political lights don't know how to achieve popularity. They become strangers to the common people and have too little contact with the press. ‘There is lacking the human contact, the symbolical ‘shake hands' of the Amer- ican President. The American states- men know the secret of how to bécome popular. And that is decidedly to their advantage. “Why don't we have pictures of the Bavarian premier as he hikes through the ‘Englischer Garten’ of a Sunday with his family? Why doesn’t the Ger- man chancellor let himself be snapped as he goes window shopping along Tauentzien street in Berlin? “It is these homely details that estab- lish the contact with the masses. The simple, human thing is what brings | people together.” riety of corn . . fully good. 2 Tins 35c ment elsewhere in this A New ‘‘Sanitary’’ COMPLETE fF,OOD STORE PURCELLVILLE, VA.
