THE SUNDAY STAR., WASHINGTON, D. C, JUNE 30, 1929—PART 5. e attle for 3-Year-Old Turf Title Is Scrambled by Defeat of Blue Larkspur . GREY COT VICTOR IN DWYER STAKES Sam Ross’ Colt, Scantily Backed at 30-1, Beats the Odds-on Choice. BY ORLO L. ROBERTSON, * Associated Press Sports Writer. EW YOFK, June 29—The con- quest for 3-year-old titular honors on American turf was | scrambled still more at Aque- | duct today as E. R. Bradley's Blue Larkspur finished second to_Sam- uel Ross’ Grey Coat in the Dwyer Stakes. Scantily backed at 30 to 1, the 3-year- old son of Gnome-Lady Grey, came up from behind like a bolt of lightning to pass the champion of the Withers and Belmont Stakes in the final strides and win by a head. Blue Larkspur was three lengths in front of the Wheatley Stable’s Flag Day, which took down the short end of the $20,000 purse, of which $19,450 went to Samuel Ross. With only four other colts of here- tofore mediocre ability entered against the pride of the Blue Grass State, Blue Larkspur was generally chneeded to have the race in the bag. In fact, so strongly was he favored that he went to the post odds-on, being quoted at 7 to 10. O'Donnell Rides Well. But past performances meant noth- ing to Steve O'Donnell, who had the ymount on the Ross color bearer. When the veteran jockey gave the word, Grey !Coat moved up gradually from fourth tion, and as the quintet of flying orses came down the long, long stretch, sprinted to the flying Blue Larkspur and in a hard drive was up to win by a head. At the half-mile Grey Coat was fourth by one length. One mile passed and still O'Donnell was holding him back in the same position. The mile- and-quarter mark flashed by and Grey Coat was in third place, with Biue Larkspar leading Flag Day by a length. ‘Then O’Donnell went to work on his mount, and Grey Coat responded gamely. In the closing drive Electa, added starter, and H. T. Archibald’s Folking dropped farther and farther behind, finishing in the order named. Grey Coat stepped the mile and one- half in 2:34. As the Dwyer Stakes went to an out- sider, so did the Tremont, the featurc event on the Metropolitan track for juveniles. Mrs. Graham Fair Vander- bilt’s inconsistent Sarazen II, quoted at 7 to 1, won the 6-furlong sprint from the classiest fleld of 2-year-olds yet to appear on a New York track this season. Running second to the namesake of the once great gelding was the Ran- cocas Stable’s Mokatam, while close behind followed Harry Payne Whitney's Prometheus, which had been made the favorite with the stable entry. Sarazen IPs time was 1:1445. S Latonia Entries. Associated Press. FIRST RACE—$1.200; ; olds and up: § Tutionge, CmIn® Star Porward.... 101 B. BY CHARLES W. DUNKLEY, Assaciated Press Sports Writer. HICAGO, June 29.—Montanaro, a 4-year-old son of Ormon needie, carrying a feather of 98 pounds on his back, won the $10,000 added Francis S. Pea- body Memorial Handicap at & mile and a quarter today, closing the June racing season at Washington Park. ‘The race was witnessed by a crowd of 20,000. ‘The winner is owned by Milton De- therage, a retired banker of Galesburg, I, and was masterfully ridden by Jockey Floyd Halbert, a Chicago boy. Montanaro was neglected in the bet- ting, despite a victory a few days ago, and rewarded his mutuel backers with $14.22 to win, $6.92 to place and $4.06 to show. Dowagiac Lands Second. He beat the Wild Rose Farm Stable’s Dowagiac by a head after leading al- most from start to finish. Seventh lengths back of the leading pair came Canaan to pull down third money. Trailing were Blackwood, the favorite; Chicago, another heavily backed starter, and the Seagram entry of Sir Harry and Gaffsman. Montanaro reeled off the mile and a quarter in 2:04 1-5, establishing & new track record for the distance. ‘The victor, favored by his light im- post, was rushed into the lead soon after the barrier was sprung and re- tained it to the finish, He was given a desperate challenge, however, by the fast-losing Dowagiac in the last six- teenth. Dowagiac had been in hot pur- suit all the way and was rapidly wear- ing down the winner. Canaan, under restraint in the early stages, could not catch the leaders when he finally did cut loose. The Seagram entry, the public choice, never figured as_contenders. The Memorial was named for the father of Stuyvesant Peabody, vice president of the Washington Park Jockey Club, $13,500, with $10,450 going to Owner Detherage. Mr. Peabody presented the winning owner with a silver trophy. M 0;!; k;yal Results Associated Press. FIRST RACE—5': furlonss. By the Assoclated Press. ATONIA RACE TRACK, June 29—E. F. Prichard’s nery today captured the cinnati Trophy, with a net value to the winner of $7,540. The favorite, Ma Yerkes, from the Brown Hotel stable, was a close second. Take Off, from the W. H. Whitehouse string, was third, and Uncle Matt, from the J. R. Devereaux stable, took the small end of the purse, ‘The race was a sprint of 6 furlongs for 2-year-olds. Tannery, away slowly, was rushed into contention right after the start, quickly disposed of Take Off in the first quarter and, racing along- side of Ma Yerkes through the stretch, gradually wore her down to win in a hard but excellent ride by A. Pascuma by a head. Ma Yerkes was taken into the lead soon after the start and held that posi- tion under steadying restraint to the last furlong, but could not withstand the winner’s final rush and took the second place money by six lengths. This was worth $1,000. ‘Take Off, away fast and always close up, saved ground throughout to take third money by half a length. This was worth $500. Uncle Matt, muci bothered in first three furlongs, closed strongly through the stretch to land in fourth place by three lengths and take the small' end of the purse, which was worth $120. Ten horses ran. The win- ner paid $12.70 for a $2 ticket. The racing was carried out under clear skies and on a good track and the large attendance saw some fine sport. Jockey Dubois landed two winners a row, Whisk Arrow in the third and Bossie in the fourth. Kadiak, Chum. BEST—SKY HIGH. Only three or four real contenders among the many named for the first. Chief of these is ADELOT, a youngster that has given creditable performances in most of his few races. His latest effort shows him beaten by a narrow margin by such as Foreign Relations. A race equal to that would win here WINGING is improving with racing. Has a smattering of class, and when right belongs in better company than this. Additiona: improvement would make the result close. FUSS AND FEATHERS trimmed the latter handily last time they met, but there should be little separating them this time, and believe the order of that last finish should be reversed Monday. Expect to see ZURICH break on top of her field and never be headed. Tha fast-working filly has had enough rac- ing education to havg her seasoned for a winning effort. She has shown somre of her speed in public, and this looks Iike the spot for her to graduate. UM- BRIAN PRINCESS is reported to be a promising filly. Bred to run, she was given an easy race in her first outing, and if she is in a racing mood Monday she should prove the one to put away. VERMICULITE has several encourag- ing efforts in the records. Been a long time winning her purse. A dangerous contender. WOOLORAC, a_smart fellow when in form, has won his last two galloping. He takes on a field full of possibilities in the third, but if he continues his speedy ways he could be a tough one to beat. MAYOR WALKER has raced himself into condition. Won't be long winning a heat if he continues meeting this | sort. He is the one to fear, and any more improvement might upsét our fig- ures, DOUBLE O has some flashy races in mud td his credit, but he is not handicaped by any particular track conditions. ~Certain to offer plenty of opposition. SKY HIGH has been knocking at the door long enough. Only nosed out last time, and that had been preceded by numerous good efforts. Appears to have a substantial edge over her opposition in the fourth and another of her good races would win for her, SURCEASE has been threatening this sort in her races and, while she does not quite appear capable of holding the top one, she is likely to prove the most stubborn of the opposition. TEASPOON failed last time when made the choice over the top one. Finished way back, but the race was too bad to be believed. Her true form would place her with the leaders, Same set of handicap stars meet here as In several previous races. The weights juggle a bit each time, and they are so closely matched that it is always hard to forecast the winner. MARTINIQUE was the winner last time the act was staged. Has steadily improved throughout the Spring and is now at the peak of her form. Takes up no weight, and should be a hard one to beat. EASTER STOCKINGS er previous form had been good enough to make her the second choice. Should she race with her usual speed she might redeem herself. ROYAL JULIAN was never in better shape. Always a menace, he has be given serious consideration. He might surprise. Clever collection of fast 3-year-olds are asked to travel the three-quarter route. Looks as though the race might resolve itself into a contest between THE CHOCTAW and PORT HARLEM. ‘The former has been racing steadily with good ones and is ripe to run off from such as these. Has enough class to make him the winner. Port Harlem displayed some keen efforts at Churchill. Had & rest since. Off her best form she is the one to fear. PLUMBAGO also has been away from racing for several weeks. His last effort entitles him to a place with the leaders, A real contender. We have to choos: between DAN BURNHAM and KADIAK in the last. ‘The former was the winner in their “"n“‘”“fi'fiu g{xmzhnd Cccasion_the route was g an ent was making his first start of tvggu;lnr Here he has an eighth of a mile further to go, and he is meeting an animal with a race under his belt as a conditioner.
