Notable Functions of Week Listed in Sched- ule of Important Happenings. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. T would be hard to picture a capital with a more beautiful and interesting background for the enactment of outdoor social events n Washington affords and it only requires such an affair as the Davis Cup matches, a garden party or outdoor tea to prove it. ‘While the President and Mrs. Hoover were compelled on account of the weather to change their intended outdoor party for the Davis Cup contestants to an indoor affair of smaller proportions, it had the advantage of leaving the full delight of the matches without the edge taken off, to be enjoyed on the Chevy Chase Club court, where ifls. Hoover was an enthusiastic guest. VENTS at the White House seem quite informal, if incessant, and | there always are interesting house guests with now and then a group of young folk such as Mrs. Hoover entertained last week. Not one, but two dinner parties in a single night broke all precedent, and while the President and Mrs. Hoover had a few guests of older years in the state dining room, the Misses Houston. were the center of a | party of younger people i the private dining room. ’ NE of the most brilliant receptions held in Washington in many moons was that at the Cuban embassy when the Ambassador and Senora de Ferrara asked several hundred to assist in the celebra- tion of the anniversary of Cuban independence. The Secretary of State, the Chief Justice and Mrs. Taft, and many others from official resident scciety congratulated the hosts and there were also many from resident society in the company. Vice President’s suite at the Mayflower was fll]ed_wnh im- portant persons, when on Wednesday afternoon his sister, Mrs. Edwand Everett Gann, held her last day at home of the season. Everywhere were flowers from the garden of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gann in Clevelghd Park and a graceful tribute to the hostess wasd the arrival of many guests bearing flowers from their own gardens. MRS, GANN was the honor guest at one of the most delightful of the many al fresco luncheon parties, when Mrs. Wade Hampton Ellis, the hostess, took her party to Gray’s Hill Inn on the Richmond road for luncheon and then on to Rippon Lodge, the Ellis country place, for tea in the open. Mrs. Maurice H. Thatcher of Kentucky entertained quite the largest luncheon party of the week, taking her more than a hundred guests to the Congressional Country Club, | where from the broad terraces they enjoyed a panorama of land- | scape beauty scarcely to be found elsewhere in Maryland. | CH‘IEF among the important social events of today, which will have an al fresco setting is the garden party at Glenview Farm on thé | Rockville road with Dr. and Mrs. James Alexander Lyon as hcsts. | Wednesday a large number of society folk will motor over to historic Fairfax, in Virginia, where the Fairfax Garden Club will hold its annual flower show. Nearer by is the rare treat which awaits the members of the Capital Federation of Garden Clubs this afternoon, wihen Mr. Whitman Cross will open his rose gardens at 101 East ! Kirk street, Chevy Chase, for their inspection. ! UNE weddings of sccial ufimerLahce }:aTe seldom been so plentiful | as those for next month, many taking place out of town, being of | quite as much interest here as those within the Capital. Ives, to Mr. James Rowland Lowe will take place Saturday in St. John’s Church on Lafayette Square, and the wedding of another Washington girl, Miss Julia duPont Andrews. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Newman &ndrews, to Mr. Alfred Ellictt Bissell of Wilmington, Del., will take »lace in the latter city on the same date.
