It takes tons of paper each week to produce the 25,771,000 Sunday newspapers read in this country. Huge logs are shredded and digested into the miles of watery pulp, thin as a film of whitewash, that rush through giant rolls and driers which turn them into finished paper. In a similar way, thousands of bales of rags are transformed to make the finer grades of paper which we write upon every day. The paper-maker’s task is an exacting one. If a single section of the long machine lags or overspeeds, the sheet breaks. Costly delays ensue. Valuable time is lost. In overcoming such interrup- Westinghouse Elecmh( vidual electric motors with sensitive electric control, keep sections in step, so that not only are breaks eliminated, but also much higher speeds are made possible. Electric motors drive the powerful grinders and chippers that reduce huge logs to shreds of wood in the twinkling of an eye. These electric improve- ments, by lowering the cost of production, help to make possible the liberal use of paper which makes this the best-read nation in the world. Westinghouse, co-operating with the engineers of the industry, developed the electric drive which makes this improved production possible. Through the Westinghouse organization the paper industry obtains, just as all industry obtains, every class of electric [ ] tions electricity is the paper- m equipment to serve all of its maker’s hest assistant.
