You simply have to know the right call. But a poor imitation won't fool these wise birds a bit. All birds and animals have their own calls, and that each call means a different thing is plain to any one who studies them. There- fore, if you can learn to make these calls accu- rately, you can talk in a limited way to all wild things. 3 A Knick-Knack Chest. Orne holf rncl? lerrnber /s wsec/ The nice thing about this chest is that it requires only six boards, and when you have it finished it makes a combination of storage space and a dandy seat. You don't have to be especially handy with tools to do a good job, but with a coping or jig saw you can improve the appearance of the ends by cutting them as shown. The curved type is better than the square end for the top, while the cutting done at the botom gives two feet at each end. Even without the scroll saw you can turn out a nice design, using straight lines. The ends are alike. Get all lumber one-half inch thick. The dithensions can vary, but if the ends are 12 inches wide and 30 inches long and the sides and top and bottom cut to give a space about 12 inches deep and 24 inches long, you will have a good-looking chest when it is finished. The side pieces are cut to fit between the ends and are held by six-penny finish nails. The bottom is set between the lower edges. The top is two inches wider than - the bottom, and instead of hinges you can use two 10-peny nalls, one driven through each- end into each rear corner of the top. It will be necessary to round the lower back edge of the top a little to insure easy opening of the top. The hinges can, of course, be used if you prefer. Before you assemble the boards, make sure that each cut is square and that the rough saw cuts have been smoothed with sandpaper or plane. See that both ends and both sides are of the same dimensions. Then assemble, driving the heads of the finish nails below the surface with a nail set. Then sandpaper thor- oughly and fill the holes over the nail heads with putty. g 7.
