MORNING, M MRS, KAY WADIL Of Copenhagen, guest of her brother-in- ster, the attache of the First Lady of Nation Wins Praise For Skill in Meeting Her Multitudinous Duties i T 2 Notable Siiccess Ac}u'cvedrin Many Activities. { Society Functions Scheduled in Capital. Congressional Club to Celebrate. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. 8 Washingtoh residents become more and more accustomed to Mrs.-Hoover as the First Lady of the Land instead of Mrs. Hoover, wife of the Director of the Food Administraticn, or Mrs. Hoover, wife of the Secretary of Commerce, the marvel grows that she is capable of so much activity of a substantial nature and | yet-fulfill to perfection all of her official social duties. The recm'd‘Y of a single day's activities would stagger the usual run cf women. | and yet Mrs. Hoover comes out of it all without a sign of fatigue and is as smiling and happy 2s a dinner hostess as in the early hours of the morning when she first takes up her duties. | RS. HOOVER has clearly shown her interest in all movements for the betterment of the lives of wemen and children since she reached womanhood. but since coming to the White House she has set an example that all future First Ladies may well emulate. Last week she attended the opening session of the Parent-Teacher Asso- ciation at the Hotel Washington and at mid-day was guest at the luncheon given for the rural section of the organization. It was on this occasion that Mrs. Hoover expressed her appreciation of country schools and said that she considered her one year as pupil in a country school of invaluable benefit in her after education. YESTEBDAY the lure of Old Virginia roads called the President and Mrs. Hoover, just as they called the First Lady of the Land the day before when she visited Richmond. However, the President was not so much interested in sightseeing as he was in fishing pools | and in country rambles. Undoubtedly these little unannounced outings will keep both the President and Mrs. Hoover from the cruel wear and tear of office if they but stoutly keep to the program. 'HE President and Mrs. Hoover have sent out invitations to a group of guests from diplomatic, official and resident circles to witness exhibition matches by the Davis Cup players on the White House tennis courts the afternoon.of Tuesday, May 21. These exhibitions will be an introduction to the preliminary games at the Chevy Chase Club, May 23 to 25, for the supreme trophy in the tennis world—the Davis Cup, now held by the French. While the social world wondered if the President. and Mrs. Hcover could possibly forego the joys of Spring garden parties. this is their solution, and the hour, 5 o'clock, s just when the sun throws long shadows over the lawn. RS. HOOVER is showing her interest in the work of the Women's Army-Navy League and has become the honorary president of that organization. Since the administration of Grover Cleveland the First Lady of the Land has 5o served the league because the President is commander-in-chief of the my and Navy. ACH afternoon Mrs. Hoover receives groups of guests and last week Mrs. James Robert McKee, daughter of the late President Benja- min Harrison, who acted as mistress of the White House after the death of her mother, was among Mrs. Hoover's guests at tea. Mrs. McKee has many friends in Washington, where she has been a frequent visitor as the guest of Mrs. Stephen B. Elkins, the late Benator Elkins having served as Secretary of War in President Har- rison’s cabinet. Mrs. McKee has been at White Sulphur Springs for several weeks and will be at the Mayflower until the middle of the week when she will jcin Mr. McKee and their daughter, Mrs, McKee Reisinger, in their home, Berkeley Lodge, at Greenwich, Conn.
