BARCE LINE SLSH ONHEAT GRANTED Secretary Good Authorizes Reduction oin Exports From Midwest. By the Associated Press. Reduction of rates on export wheat carried by the Mississippi-Warrior &crvice of the Inland Waterways Corpo- | raticn’s bargs line was authorized yes- terday. by Secretary Good to be effec- tive betwéen May 15 and September 30. The reduction was recommended by Maj. Gen. I Q. Ashburn, chairman ‘of the board of the corporation, and is in lin® with the recent action of rail- roads carrying grain in acceding to Precident Hoover’s suggestion that the grain taxes on export wheat and flour be_lowered. It also is & continuation of the Fed- eral Barge Line's policy to readjust its rates so as to maintain a differential under rail rates. The new barge line's rates will be 10 cents a hundred pounds to New Orleans from St. Paul-Minneapolis; 9.7 cents from Burlington, Iowa; 6 cents from St. Louls and 4.5 cents from Cairo, IIL Application for the necessary orders will be filed with the Interstate Com- merce Commission, and it is estimated by the barge line officials that be- tween 3,000,000 and 4,000,000 bushels | of wheat will be moved because of the reduction. LAW COMMITTEE GIVES ROUSE $50, Money for Defraying Bond Costs Accompanies Letter of Praise From Howard. The National United Committee for law Enforcement has given Police- man Clyde O. Rouse of the eleventh precinct $50 to defray the expenses of the bond executed for his release fol- lowing his killing of a rum-running suspect who used a smoke screen in an attempt to escape arrest. In a letter accompanying the -gift Ciinton N. Howard, chairman of the committee and speaking for the com- mittee, said the ly “wishes to con- gratulate you on the action of the grand jury in exonerating and com- mending you for your act of heroism in apprehending smoke-screen rum- runners at _the risk of your own life. I1 the letter Howard said Rouse’s excaeration by the grand jury in the slaying of Ottmer Fleming, 21, was “a fitting rebuke for those members of Co who sought to make s martyr of the unfortunate victim of his own folly in attempting to smoke-screen the guardians of the law and the Consti- tution of his country.” The letter concludes: “As an expres- slon of our appreciation for yeur sup- port of law and order our Capital City, we to check for 4 our $50 to reimburse you for the cost of the bond exccuted for your reiease.” CITIZENSHIP REQUESTED.
