STLTS NO | MATTE| R, #HOW_HiGH WED BUILD EM —AND — JTILL— BEDTIME STORIE How Coyotes Got Dinner, The clever always find a way To have a dinner every day —Old Man Covote, ‘Wanderer the Evening Grosbeak had come from the West, as you know. Not only had he traveled a long way East, but he had traveled a long way South from his Summer home. In his travels he had seen many interesting things and had become acquainted with many interesting people, as is the way with most travelers. So it was that Peter was learning a great deal from him, for ‘Wanderer and Mrs. Wanderer had chosen to rest a while in and around the Old Orchard before turning back for the nesting season. “Did you say that you once saw Old Man Coyote and Mrs. Coyote catch a dinner of Prairie Dog?” inquired Peter Rabbit. ‘Wanderer nodded. “That’s what I #aid,” replied he. “Of course, it wasn't the Old Man Coyote and the Mrs. Coyote who are living on the Green Meadows here. It was a couple of their relatives out in the West, who go by the same name. I just happened to be passing a Prairie Dog town. There was a little tree not far from it, and 1 It was funny. y. Every one that was sitting on & mound dived down. Those that were running around between the mounds scampered for the nearest hole. You know, the hole is always in the center of one of those mounds. Then all those heads disappeared again. It was just as if that Prairie Dog town was deserted. “You should have seen Mrs. Coyote move then. She didn't waste any time. In no time at all she was flattened out in the grass, right close to one of those mounds. Old Man Coyote kept right on. He sniffed at one doorway after another, and finally went off, apparent- ly about his business elsewhere. Aft- er a while one of those Prairie Dogs poked his head out. He saw Old Man Coyote some distance away and still going. He scrambled out on top of his little watchtower, for that is what each mound is. Then he barked. Almost right away the heads began to pop out all around and out scrambled the Prairie Dogs, each one sitting up the way Johnny Chuck sits up, and all of them telling Old Man Coyote what they thought of him. “At last. the Prairie Dog who lived in the hole beside which Mrs. Coyote was hiding poked his head out. By this time many of the Prairie Dogs were begining to run about, visiting back and forth. This one nearest to Mrs. Coyote sat up, and, of course, he looked right straight over toward Old Man Mrs. Coyote didn’t move, The Prairie Dog left the mound and went over to visit a neighbor. Another came out of the same hole. It was then that Mrs. Coyote came to life. My, how quick she moved! She caught this one and gave it a shake. Then, like & flash, she was across and had caught the other. Such a scrambling as there was among those Prairie Dogs to get back to safety! “Now, Old Man Coyote had been watching, and the instant Mrs. Coyote moved he had turned back. He came trotting up in a broad grin. There was a fat Prairie Dog for each of them. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn't seen it. The Coyotes are smart. Yes, sir, they are smart. You want to watch out, Peter Rabbit, that they don’t play some such trick on you.” “I'll watch,” said Peter. (Copyright, 1929.)
