'THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D.” C.° 'I‘HURS'D’AY": MARCH T4, 1929. “My Thirty Years . at Sea” (Copyright, 1929, by Associated Press.) CHAPTER XVI I suppose every man has a hobby and ' the seaman .is. no . exception. - In fact, T believe the man who chooses the sea for his vocation would have a num- ber of hobbies if it were not for the fact that it often is an expensive pastime. He is given unusual op- portunities in the collection of curios and other articles that may be picked up in various parts of the world. My first hobby was the collecting of stamps. I was a youngster in Worcester. I went into the post.office one day and picked up several letters bearing postage stamps which had been thrown away. ‘There was a certain appeal to various parts of the world. Today my collection numbers about 12,000 dif- ferent specimens, some of them un- doubtedly of value. +oFor. @ time in my early service I collected coins, but that proved too expensive. Every coin added meant the saving of a corresponding amount in United -States currency and before I got very far in a foreign port I had several dollars’ worth of coins and no money for sightseeing or entertain- ment. For a while I kept the coins of smaller denominations, but then I de- cided to abandon the idea, not only because they were a total financial loss, in so far as the keepsake was con- cerned, but also because they were heavy. *, . . One of my hobbles has filled our house with lamps . , ™ me about a postage stamp. Its colors and designs intrigued me, but evsn greater than that was the thought that the stamp had traveled. The idea of adventure in travel, even though it was such an inanimate thing as a stamp, gave it a kind of reality. So, whenever I was in town the post office was always a port of call. Sometimes I had luck, other times I found nothing. But I was persistent and determined. Whenever I started from home my collection, small though it was, was always part of the baggage. I treated the stamps with the same care as my extra clothing and never lost the chance of picking up new ones. Take Up Collecting. ‘The idea occurred to me one day that I would make my collection unique in that I would never buy one but ‘would have in my album those given me by friends or received on letters from | R"U"[“lfilkwj Hijl |‘|h?“l hlhlfli |I|’|3',p‘illlu hhh i _\ | | u" s a | standpoint. Ay After I had established & home I did what I suppose every married man will do—brought home presents for my wife. I bought a Chinese bronze lamp that seemed to please Mrs. Fried, who liked lamps so much that I decided to get others. To this I have added an Euglish barn lantern, a French one of wrought iron, one of Italian made in bronze and a German mahogany floor lamp. Each lamp is distinctive of the country it represents and because of the diversity in design the group is Interesting ‘as well from an artistic For the time being, how- ever, I have enough lamps in the house. Fond of Pets. -As far back-as I can remember every vessel on which I shipped had pets. Seamen have a fondness for pets that is not-always found among landsmen. One which I prize very highly is Du- parc’s impression of the foundering of the British freighter Antinoce, with the President Roosevelt standing by as the crew was being rescued. Others in the collection, several of which are by R. Dumont Dupare, official marine painter for the French government, de- pict the rigs of assorted sailing vessels and are unusually interesting because they show-the changes of rigging in these ships down through marine history. I have never considered reading a hobby inasmuch as it is more or less in my daily routine of activities aboard ship and while I am in port. Pets on shipboard are given every consideration and, when a vessel gets in trouble and it is necessary to abandon ship, the birds or animals are taken along if the men are saved, sometimes at great risk. ‘While on the Bremen run our ships often brought thousands of canaries from Germany, as well as other valuable birds. After I had my own quarters I always had a canary to cheer up my room, and, of course, took some birds home, The little fellows are wonder- ful companions.
