LOUIS, March 14.—The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said yesterday that $247,- 000 in counterfeit bonds have been dis- covered in the assets of the Interna- tional Life Insurance Co. The International Co. was taken over by the Missouri State Life Insurance Co. several months ago after discovery of the alleged removal of $3500,000 from assets of the International by its president, Roy C. Toombs, now under indictment on State charges of embez- zlement and larceny of bonds and on a Federal charge of using the mails to de- fraud. The newspaper says the new shortage TN By AN NNANNNUNNNNNNNANNNNNNNNN e QNN N\ Striking futuristic de- signs in dashing color effects. Full size and is in bonds for $247,000 bearing the name of the city of Lansing, Ills., sold to the International Life by Toombs and carried in its assets with other town- ship, county and municipal bonds. Tt adds that the bonds were found to be counterfeit after interest coupons were sent to Lansing for redemption. The town officials, the Post-Dispatch says, informed the insurance company that no such bonds had been issued. This is the first instance of alleged counterfeiting of bonds in the investiga- tion into the affairs of the International Co. It has not been established, ac- cording to the newspaper, that Toombs knew the bonds were counterfeit when he placed them in the assets of the company. Hillsman Taylor, president of the Mis- souri State Life, declined to make a statement, saying he desired to consult the company's counsel. REPORT ON GEORGIA JAILS ATTACKED BY INSPECTOR National Crime Commission’s Find- ings Are “Misleading” Official’s Statement Says. By the Associated Press. ‘ ATLANTA, Ga., March 14.—Declar- ing that the National Crime Commis- sion had made an unjust attack on Georgia's- county jails in a recent re- port, Thomas D. Mimms, director of jail inspections for the Georgia State Department of Public Welfare, in a pre- pare dstatement yesterday charged that the report was “misleading” in that it was prepared from an old pamphle pre- pared in 1921. “Georgia’s jails have made outstand- ing progress in classifying and grouping prisoners, as evidenced by the Depart- ment of Public Welfare’s recent reports, which are available to any one who de- sires them,” the statement continued. “Immense improvement has also been made in matters of sanitation, general facilities and equipment. as attested by recent actual counting and tabulation.” ADVERTISEMENT. ‘Greatest Medicine| « Known to M¢’ Said Virginia Avenue Lady Who | Praises Miller's Herb Extract | < iAbove Exerything Else for| Beneficial Results. { “No other medicine would ever dn‘ for me what your Herb Extract| Remedy has; no medicine I ever| used before would thoroughly re:u-\ late me and free me from my ail-| ments like this great medicine has: | really, it has benefited me beyond‘ all expectations,” said Mrs. Jewell | Weltlg, popular St. Louis resident, who lives at 7206 Virginia avenue, | and who is one among thousands | to praise Miller's Herb Extract (for- | merly called Herb Juice), for better health after using it. MRS.
