The Greatest Day in Christendom —is Easter. Christmas, the Birth- day of Christ, is a day of joy and wonder to the Christian, but Easter, the Day that commemorates the Risen Christ, is indeed a day apart. Every year Easter comes to us to remind us that the dead shall indeed arise; that our earthly span is a thing of a moment, and of little worth. Horace A. Mann, Southern manager for Herbert Hoover during the presi- ‘dl‘nfial campaign, in a statement Jast night denied he wished to control dis- | tribution of Southern patronage and ‘nssm’wd he had told the Republican national committee that he intended | “to have nothing to do with political patronage.” | “In view of the widely published mis- | representations concerning my cours at a recent meeting of the executive committee of the Republican national committee,” the statement said, “I wish to state that I attended this meet- ing at the invitation of Chairman Work, |and that my sole participation in it was to discuss the general Southern | political situation. So far from de- manding the passage of a resolution giving me credit for the result and set- ting me up as a patronage referee in the South, I claimed and asked for no credit and_distinctly stated that I in- tended to have nothing to do with po- litical patronage.” Reports had been circulated that Mr. Mann had unsuccessfully sought to | have the national committee adopt a | patronage plan at the executive com- mittee session and that he later had presented this plan to President Hoo- ver as titular head of the Republican party. In the statement Mann said he had | sought to have some officer of the com- | mittee clear up the “misrepresentation” that he had been on the pay roll of the national committee, but that James Francis Burke, counsel of the commit- |tee, gave an “official opinion to the effect that under the rules of the com- | mittee this could not legally be done.” He asserted that his call on the Presi- dent had “nothing to do with any con- | troversy with the national committee.” | “So far from desiring now to act as |a patronage dispenser,” he continued, “I am voluntarily turning over my rec- {ords to Chairman Work, having con- tinued my work beyond the end of the sampaign only at the request of the then President-elect.” He said there was absolute harmony in the Southern organization which op- campaign.
