A-UpoN ARBITRATION s - ' THE SUNDAY STAR. WASHINGTON, D. C, MARCH 10, 1929—PART 1, BRTANDUETOAT Official Circles Expect Defi- & nite Decision Soon on Proposed Treaty. By the Associated Press. Definite action by the British gov- ermment on the proposed arbitration treaty between Great Britain and the United States is expected by official and diplomatic circles to be taken shortly, The new treaty would replace the famous Root arbitration treaty signed between the two countries in April 1908, which automatically expired last June. « Drafts of a treaty similar to that which the United States had signed with other nations were submitted to the British Ambassador, Sir Esme Howard, late in 1927, but to date the British government has taken no ac- |y tion. In the interim it is understood the British foreign office has been con- sulting with the dominions. The new treaty confines the subjects which are excepted from arbitration to their discussion with the foreign office ‘city council. A Trio of Big Values We shall place on sale Monday morning an exceptional value in Living Room Suites, Bedroom Suites and Dining Room Suites. the value is plainly greater than the price—indica- tive of the advantage which you will enjoy here in “Furniture of Merit” and always of exceptional value. springs on w 17 o » B4 This Livin Three luxurious pieces, covered with genuine mohair. fortable and durable seats. tively covered. There are four pieces, all of artistic design, high-grade workmanship, fig- ured burl walnut veneers and gum- wood, finished in the rich lustrous walnut shade. T | much closer lines than the Root treaty. | The only exceptions in which arbitra- tion would not be allowed are questions of a domestic nature, those involving {a third party, those which might inter- | fere with the traditional attitude of the United States under the Monroe Doc- trine and obligations of the British Em- pire under the covenant of the League of Nations All of the British dominions are understood to have made their position own to the foreign office and discus- sions are now taking place to meet their | views and decide upon a middle course which will meet with the dominions’ de- sires and at the same time not destroy | the cffectiveness of such a treaty. Deminions May Want Direct Pact. t is believed possible in some circles | here that both Canada and the Irish Free State might prefer a clause in the treaty permitting them to negotiate directly with the United States ques- | tions which only concern them and do | not invoive other sections of the British Empire. It is not belicved likely, how- |ever, that either of these dominions | would refuse to approve the treaty in the event that such a clause was not | inserted. { It has also been suggested that Can- ! 2da and the Free State might negotiate a separate arbitration treaty with the | United States, feaving the treaty with Great Britain to cover the Dominions of Australia, South Africa and New land. Although diplomatic eircles believe that such separate treaties would be acceptable to the United States, the | plan has not received much attention. | When the dominions have decided in | just what they desire in the treaty, Sir |Esme Howard will be instructed to be- | gin_conversations with State Depart- ment officials. |GAS PROPERTIES SOLD | IN SOUTHERN TERRITORY | | e | Chicago Corporation Takes Control of Subsidiary Interests in Three States.
