SHOES N DRVER *FAGTOR N SHFETY Sport Variety Often Impedes Wearer’s Progress to Brakes. Well shod drivers are as essential to #afety in motoring as well shod cars, secording to a veteran local motorist, who contends that many car operators &re wearing dangerous shoes. In his opinion, shoes play an fmpor tant rol and in cars, and it is high time that safety advocates urge more common EBense in footwear! “Sturdy tires on the car alone will riot make motoring safe,” he says. “The drivers themselves must have sturdy shoes. Footwear must be such as to provide for a sure hold on the clutch and brake pedals and free move- ! ment from accelerator to brake, or vice versa. “Women are not the only violators ©of common sense in footwear. Many men are wearing golf shoes when driv- ing their cars, and much of the tardl- | ness in bringing cars to a ndstill can be traced to difficulty in removin the foot from accelerator and | transferring it promptly to the brake pedal. There also have been numer- 0us cases where drivers have operated thelr cars while wearing base ball running and other tyy ) rort shoes In some Instances, these have inter. fered seriously with the driving process. “Much of the difficulty encountered by many drivers is due directly to the shoes they wear. Women especially are prone te have trouble feeding gas Wwith the acceleratar due to the sharp leverage action occasioned by the use | of excessively high heels. *“Regardless of the shoes one wears when driving, due comsideration be given to wear to y of slippe: stance, may be a straigt accident. THE SUNDAY MOTORIST An Abridged Magazine for Car Owners EDITED BY WILLIAM ULLMAN Verily, fools rush in where even traffic cops fear to tread. Take Self-Inventory. In the office of a certain business man there hangs on the wall a very apropos motto. ‘our conception of the world,” it reads, “Is very largely your concep- tion of yourself.” The business man hannens to be a motorist. He is thinking of having a copy of the motto made #o that he can ach it to the instrument board of his car. . This is hardly necessary, however, since he already has caught the spirit of the motto and acts upon its sug gestion automatically. This man doesn't wrong with traffic. He has no com- plaint to make about parking. Mo- toring, to him, is safer than it used to be Stating it another way, he does noth- ing to complicate traffic. He uses no more parking space than he needs, plans his stops In advance and does not park any longer than is necessary. He does everything in his power to avoid accidents, being more careful lay by day in every way. His conception of his own driving is both favorable and accurate. Con- sequently his conception of motoring as a whole is very much the same. Somewhat of a contrast to the ha- bitual kicker who forgets that his own mistakes may be the ones that will upset the boat. The 01d Mechanic Says: Sometimes the other fellow's mis- take is the basis of your puzzle Here’s a little incident that'll explain what I mean: The other day 1 was called out to try to find out why a certain car in town wouldn't start. It had stopped suddenly, which naturally indicated electrical trouble, but I'll admit it had me fooled fox awhile. The starter worked, but there was no ignition and the only light on the car was the one on_the Instrument board. That’s what puzzled me—the little ight on the dash. If there had been no lights at all and no ignition, but plenty of juice for the starter, it would have been simple. I would have known that the ammeter was on the blink, because the current for the lights and ignition has to pass through see anything this indicator, arate circuit. Just to be sure about everything I got out the instruction book and checked up. I don't believe in guessin’ when a guide is right under my nose. There was the wirin’ dlagram to tell The starter has a sep-| the whole story as to how the thing ought to work, and it fitted in exactly with the way I thought it out for my self. Yet there was the dash light bright as you\}fleua, but no Hghts in the lamps. Not a fuse was blown out. Not a wire was disconnected. 1 began to suspect that in buildin’ the car some one made a few changes to suit themselves. That's a good way to figure when there doesn't seem to be any logic to things. So I got out the pliers, removed the ammeter from the instrument board and took a look at the connections. Sure enough there was the wire for the dash ligh taken off the battery side of the am meter instead of the generator. T really doesn't make much differenc because the current used by the dast light hardly registers on the ammeter anyway, but it serves to puzzle the tellow who tries to reason out trouble Two Parking Pointers. How many times in the course of the day do you scrape the right tires against the curb? An excellent way to tell is to paint the tires with black | tire paint and then note the number of telitale marks at the end of the day. It will help preserve the tires as well as encourage the habit of avolding the curb. It you are planning to attach an air | cleaner to your car it is a good plan to insert several feet of flexible piping between cleaner and carburetor, | rather than to connect them directly This makes it possible to change the | position of the cleaner to suit varying climatic and weather conditions, in order to provide for the right tem- | perature of air. The cleaner can thus be located nearer the radiator for | mmer driving, when the coolest air is desired, or Jocated at a warm spot under the hood when the hottest air is needed, as In extremely cold weather. The flexible piping also can be wired to the exhaust manifold to provide for further preheating of the alr, if necessary. In hot weather driving the flexible tube, however, should be kept away from the exhaust manifold, since the engine will op- erate better on the coldest air you can give it. There seems to be an inclination on the part of the tire industry to be pre- pared for punctures in the balloon tire line, despite the fact that most bal- loon tire users report remarkably little need for changing tubes. Pro- duction of balloon inner tubes s ex- ceeding the production of balloon cas. ings. For the first four months of the year 3,804,824 inner tubes of the balloon type were produced by 75 per cent of the industry, which co-oper- ates with the Rubber A: America in keeping the public in- formed of such matters. This does not equal the balloon casing produc- tion of 4,428,074 in the same period, but inner tube production for April was approximately 250,000 ahead of casing production. The production of balloon inner tubes actually ex- ceeded by a slight margin the produc- tion of high-pressure casings for April. Production of fabric casings fell down to 562,449 in April. This is very close to the low level reached July, 1924. This July will probably see the fabric falling by the wayside. Here Are the Facts. There was a reduction in Canadian insurance premiums for auto coverage during 1924, The fire loss ratio for companies transacting business in Canada, however, decreased from 55.4 per cent in 1923 to 47.7 per cent in 1924. The loss ratio for the casualty insurers, on the other hand, increased from 40.6 to 44.7 for the correspond- ing periods. Despite the greater distances be- tween cities only 20 per cent of the tonnage of freight that is carried by motor truck is hauled more than 70 miles, again proving the contention of the Department of Agriculture that ANNOUNCEMENT! Why do gasoline tank wagons and trwcks dangle a chain from the frame to the road? 4. Why do front wheels tend to turn out when the car goes over a bump? 5.
