STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C CHANGES DESIRED INAUTO INDUSTRY Makers Seek Cheaper, More Efficient and Much Less Complex Motors. BY J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispatch to The Star. EW YORK, June 11.—For weeks before Decoration day automobile engineers were busy building _up racing cars. Since that date they have been equally busy taking them 1down to see what happened to them during the severe test of the motor ng classic, The attention of t automotive enzineers h bheen turned by th race to the front wheel drive, revived in the models sponsored by Harry Miller, noted Californiadesigner. Tractor Method Ma pread. _ The front wheel drive is innovation. It has been used back in the days when Barney field was a speedway figure. The| Miller drive. however, merely shifts the rear axle to the ition of the front ome. This does away with a| long drive shaft, with tendency not an before, old- | its to “whip,” or vibrate, at high speeds. | It enables the maker to get the car| closer to the ground, adding to sta- bility and ety. | some of the advanced designers | here are of the opinion that the trac tor method of propulsion may hecome the next feature of automobile en-| gineering. They believe that the pul- | ler type wil serve to eliminate skidding or sliding and give better road ability. | They id that it would eliminate a joint, the drive shaft and ts and ake for economy in 1t, material and labor costs. In the discussion of the prevailing popularity of the public utilities with the investor stress is usually put upon the electric light and power section of the industry. The record justifies this emphasis, but there s another field which deserves attention, and that is the artificial and natural gas business, the growth of which has too often been lost sight of in the dazzling bril- liance of the progress made in the electrical industry. Investors are apt to assume that the opportunities for expansion in gas sales are very limited, but the statis- tics do not bear out this supposition. Taking the six y from 1919 to 1924, the record shows an increase of about one-third in the total cubic feet of artificial gas consumed. In 1924 the amount used was 405,000,000,000 cubic feet, which was a gain of 20, 000,000,000 cubic feet over 1923. These are not the figures of a declining en- terprise. The fact is that new uses for gas are constantly being found in factories and shops as its merits as fuel are becoming better appreciated. Electricity has replaced gas an an illuminant, but for heating and as a fuel generally new possibilities are continually being opened. Once these fundamentals are clearly understood, the investor is free to ex- amine specifically the securities of the gas companies with much the same confidence with which he regards the offerings of the electric light and power corporations. Stocks and bonds of thejgas industry vary in merit just as do those of organizations in other lines, but the industry itself occupies a place which there is no present sign anything else can fill. If you are a customer of a well managed, prosperous gas company you will do well to consider adding a proportion of its securities to your in- vestment list. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 11.—Coal Age reports that a better feeling seems to - creeping into the bituminous coal trade. Even though the improvement is so slight as to be scarcely percep tible, progress, such as it is, is in the direction. While production is gradually climbing, it is still believed to be lower than consumption, which means that dwindling stock piles are continuing to melt and that the inevi ble upturn cannot be postponed in- definitely. Basic conditions being sound and the midyear turn being at hand, it is considered more than likely that an increase of buying will soon be in evidence. lasing off continues in the anthra > trade.
