SUOPES S PLEAS WTHBEING AT "Enjoys Position, But Malone Declares He Will Not Be “Clerk” in Case. By the Associaied Press. NEW YORK, June 11.—Figurative goats, instead of monkeys, have fig- ured largely in the closing hours of the New York visit of John T. Scopes, high school teacher who goes on trial next month at Dayton, Tenn., for vio- lating the State law against the teach- ing of evolution. In an address last night to New York sympathizers Scopes told of his pleasure over “being the goat” in a fight for freedom of thought. Dudley Field Malone, New York lawyer, who had been relegated to as- sist with research work; announced Lhat he would not be a.*‘goat,” that he would assist actively in the case or not at all. So he was accepted as one of active counsel. Scopes, who leaves for home today, was a guest at a_dinner of the Civic Club last night. He said.he was em- barrassed in addressing the distin- guished group of liberals and radicals, first because he was voung and inex- perienced, and, secondly, because while an automobile had been sent to get Clarence Darrow, one of his counsel, he had to walk to the club and got lost. Being Goat Not Bad. “Being a goat is not so unpleasant,” he said. “If you are going to be a goat you want to take thought as to wheth- er you are to be a big goat or a little one. I really and truly think this is a fight for freedom of thought. This trial is not to judge whether I am a criminal.” John Randolph Neal, chief counsel for Scopes, has announced a revision in associate council. They will -be Clarence Darrow, Bainbridge Colby, Dudley Field Malone, Arthur Garfield Hays, Eastern manager of the La 2 aign last fall, and Charles ormer Senator from Colo- “I either stay on an equal basis with other associate counsel or I quit cold,” Malone sald. “I will not be the goat. I am accustomed to let my clerks look up references for me. If that is the only way I can help, I must withdraw.” When invited to speak at the din- ner to Scopes last night Darrow re. plied, “I won’t come unless you let me make a speech.” And speech he did make, bristling with references to “Bryans and bromides,” and conclud- ing with this plea for toleranuce: ““The best way is to try to interfere as little as possible with other people, ate a broad spirit of-tolerance ity and let people live their Mr. Neal invited everybody down to Tennessee for the trial, saying that the Summer climate was fine and that there are no mosquitoes. DAVID W. ROSS DEAD. President of United Collieries Com- pany Succumbs in New York. NEW YORK, June 11 (®).—David William Ross, 55, president of the United Collieries Co., formerly vice president and purchasing agent of the Interborough Rapid Transit Co., one time purchasing agent of the Isthmian Canal Commission, died yesterday after a week’s illness. The body will be taken to Memphis, Tenn., for burial beside that of his wife, formerly Miss Adele B. Dillard. Mr. Ross entered the service of the Ilinois Central Railway at the age of 19, remaining there for 17 years. When Theodore P. Shonts became president of the Interborough he in- vited Mr. Ross to join him. Diseases of Dogs And Their Cures Told in Circular Agriculture Department Issues New Bulletin On Infections. ‘What the Department of Agricul- ture knows about parasites and para- sitic diseases of dogs is afferded dog fanciers in concise form in Depart- ment Circular 338, just issued, it was announced today. Next to distemper and mange, said the announcement, worm infestations, especially roundworm and hookworm, are the most prevalent disorders among dogs. Of the large number of worm parasites, and of external parasites, such as fleas, lice and ticks, only a few of the more impor- tant ones are discussed. The importance of knowledge of these parasites, t department con- tinued, is heightened by the fact that a number of them are transmissible in some form to men and to live stock. “Prevention is the business of the dog owner,” the announcement con- cluded. “It is largely a matter of sanitation and careful sapervision of the dog’s habits, especially his food. A dog becomes infested in one of two ways: by being in contact with infested premises or infested animals or by eating raw or insufficiently cooked meat. neglected carcasses, dis- carded viscera or raw fish containing the larvae of worms.” Coples of the circular may be had by writing to the department here.
