BEMIDJI, BELTRAMI COUNTY AND NORTHERN MINNESOTA. E. H. WINTER & CO. Among the representative concerns of Bemidji—the business houses that count as substantial bulwarks of our prosperity—is the firm of E. H. Winter & Co., leaders in general merchandise. Throughout this pro- ductive country, there is no business house that overshadows this emporium of general trade. The ability of E. H. Winter & Co. to fur- nish nearly every want of the public, and the stock which the concern carries is so varied that the wants of all can be easily supplied. This is a general merchandise store, stocked from cellar to garret with every known need, and besides a general line of staples they handle beef in quantities and flour and feed. In the dry goods line this store carries the highest grades. Anything in the line of muslins, silks, satins, cambrics, lawn and woolen goods for all purposes, dress goods, etc., are carried by E. H. Winter & Co. The line of groceries carried by E. H. Winter & Co. represents the finest and most popular brands of all kinds of canned goods, vegetables, butter and eggs, being the freshest and best that the market af- fords. And the produce of farmers is pur- chased by this firm, the very highest mar- ket price being paid for the things which the farmers bring to Bemidji, the firm doing everything possilble to encourage the devel- opment of this part of the state and pro- viding markets for the fruits of the soil. The firm of E. H. Winter & Co.. are among Bemidji’s most influential and potent business factors. They are willing to affix their seal and lend their material aid to any reasonable proposition which will tend to advance the prosperity and general welfare of this community. This general merchandise house is also one which is deserving of an industrial pat- ronage. They have invested their money ‘: E. H WINTER & CO.’S STORE. here; they maintain one of the leading stores in the community; they propogate the question of home patronage of home in- dustries; the house itself stands as a mon- ument of business sagacity and integrity, and the especial attention of our readers is called to its high qualifications as a business house. The well-established solidity of E. H. Winter & Co. is along the lines of perma- nent progress of Bemidji, and The Pioneer, in reflecting the various interests which Bemidji has to offer as a financial, agricul- tural, educational and industrial center, knows of mo firm or individual whom it would more gladly bring to the public no- tice than this firm. ‘ FARMERS LAND COMPANY. This firm is among the oldest estab- lished realty concerns in this portion of Minnesota, while the members thereof, Messrs. A. H. Kleven and Erick Nelson, with few exceptions, the oldest settlers in Beltrami county. Mr. Kleven took up a homestead on Blackduck River seven- teen years ago, while Mr. Nelson settled on a similar claim, located three miles southwest of Bemidji fifteen years ago. At the time these gentlemen become homesteaders this territory was but a wilderness. At the time of their arrival in this section of Minnesota they could hear the howl of the wolf and the crash- ing noise made by moose horns; could see the deer in scores, and bands of caribou, an animal now scarce owing to its merciless slaughter, were a dally scene. But from a howling and wild wilder- ness, these two sturdy pioneers have Iived to see the land cleared, and where there was aught but timber and underbrush beautiful and productive farms now ap- pear to the vision. These gentlemen as a result have no complaint to make. Each of them own ‘their own vine and fiz tree,” and then have to spare—fruits of their insistent and well applied ef- forts, and a reward for their frugality and bravery in facing the frontier. Messrs. Kleven and Nelson, comprising the Farmers Land Company, are among the most prominent real estate dealers in this section, as well as being the longest established. They own and conirol some- thing like 30,000 acres of land in Bel- trami, Ttasca amd XKoochiching counties, the which include timber land, farm and meadow and wild lands. They have also a choice lot of city and town property, and their record as men of extreme creditability is known far and near. As may be Inferred, these two gentle- men are among the most pushing of Beltrami county’s residents. They have been well repaid for the trust they im- posed in the possibilities of this vicinity, as have all others who have invested here, and The Pioneer is gratified to allot to them this brief space in commemora- tion of their resolution and unflagging labor in developing this portion of the state. BEMIDJI DECORATORS. It is wholly unnecessary to heap en- comiums upon a firm which has earned the enviable record of which this firm can boast. Aside from being adepts in paper hanging, calsomining, house painting and artistic interior work, they are fresco painters of the highest order, their past work standing as impressive evidence of their skill and taste. The firm of Barnell, Hand & Hoft possess every modern equipment for the prosecution of their work, they are ar- tists outside the pale of gemeral work, and the value of their work is reflected not only in Bemidji, but throughout this entire region. This firm has undertaken the most extensive contracts for painting s a1 e N T 8 S A A T IR v T O KL BTSRRI T
