BEMIDJI, BELTRAMI COUNTY AND NORTHERN MINNESOTA. J. J. TRASK. THE BEMIDJI STEAM LAUNDRY. The Bemidji Steam Laundry is one of the oldest business houses in this city. It was established by, and 'was highly prosperous, under the ownership and management of Mr. C. E. Albrant. Mr. J. J. Trask is the present pro- prietor of the laundry and he gives his undivided attention to the business. The laundry has just been greatly im- proved by renovation, remodelling and by the addition of more modern and larger machinery. It is now prepared, and it is its aim, to do a high grade of work, usch as befits an institution that renders service to a city of ten thousand people. Much of Mr. Trask’s former life was " that of teaching, he having been on the faculty of the university of North Da- kota, and also at Macalister College, St. Paul. He has just returned to Bemidji, after an absence of a few years and now expects to make this city his future home. 0. C. ROOD & COMPANY. This popularly-known concern is one of the many in Bemidji which have moved from other cities, knowing that there was a greater field here for their operations than in the cities from whence they came. O. C. O, C. ROOD. } i and L. E. Rood, the members of this busi- ness house, were, previous to the establish- ment of their business in Bemidji, for ten years extensive dry goods merchants at Crookston. They carry an immense line of dry goods, shoes, furnishings and notions of the latest styles and textures, and at prices which range from high priced to nominal. They make a specialty of the Foot-Schulz shoe, a Minnesota production of the most desirable quality, and a shoe which should be bought by all those who have the best interests of the state at heart. Messrs. O. C. and L. E. Rood are two examples of what one can accomplish when they devote their energies to self elevation and success. From a modest beginning these gentlemen have risen to a plane of prominence in the business realm. Their trade since their arrival here is increasing at a phenomenal rate, and their inherent business qualities are bound to be produc- tive of the same degree of success they achieved when they were merchants in Crookston. The Rood Brothers are warm advocates and active workers in the move to secure for Bemidji the proposed Normal School, and they say so. They make their declara- tions good by pointing out the fact “that Bemidji is the only practical point for the L. E. ROOD. building of this school,” a commendable spirit to say the least. Both members of this firm are affable, trained and well-to-do business men, and our thousands of readers will de well to visit their place of business when in need of anything in their line. THE METROPOLITAN CLUB. ,This is the most influential social club in Bemidji, composed as it is of the most energetic and pushing men of the city, who, besides having banded themselves together for social intercourse are active in their efforts to secure industries for the city and further every motive which tends to the city’s betterment and ad- vancement. The Metropolitan Club has a member- ship of over 100, and is comprised of the most notable business men of the city. The aim of the club is to propogate every interest of Bemidji while enjoying social contact and intercourse, and like the Be- midji Commercial Club, the members of this body are ever alert as to what is doing relative to the city’s welfare. The officers of the club are: J. F. Boss, president; W. N. Bowser, vice-president; F. S. Arnold, secretary; W. L. Brooks, treasurer. | | M. A. DOWNS. DOWNS & O’LEARY. In this Souvenir Edition of The Pioneer, which will be read by thousands throughout this section, it is our chief aim to signify and prove by comparison that Bemidji con- tains many of the most up-to-date stores to be found anywhere. The above-named grocery house is one of them. Go where you may, you will not find a grocery better stocked, better lighted and ventilated or cleaner. Downs & O’Leary have, using simple dialect, one of the most elegant and metropolitan stores in the city and one which is an exclusive grocery store from one end to the other. On the theory of being enterprising in stock as well as store arrangements, this firm has crowded the counters with an ele- gant and attractive array of the best known canned goods, while the dried fruits, Mocha and Java coffee, aromatic teas and fresh vegetables, sweet-scented and better tasting butter are of the most wholesome and mer- itorious character. They have been in busi- ness since the year 1906, and that they have enjoyed an ever increasing business is manifest by the daily deliveries they make. M. A. Downs and F. J. O’Leary are two self-made men, both having been clerks prior to their entry into business. Mr. Downs has been a resident of Bemidji for ten years, and Mr. O’Leary was, for three years, employed by O’Leary & Bowser. They are trained in buying as well as sell- ing, and hence their customers get the ben- efit of experience in both quality and price. They guarantee every sale they make, their deliveries are up to the promised minute, and as merchants they are congenial, ac- commodating and gentlemanly. Mesrs. Downs and O’Leary are imbued with the spirit of local pride. They are de- sirous of seeing Bemidji grow, and are con- tributing their share of good work to that end. They are among the merchants who co-operate with the others to advertise this section as a pleasure resort, and deserve unstinted patronage as a home institution, they rank among the first. . ” e e e e ———— S — S ————— A e R R A S e A B B T B e e = . %
